I tried the SCS sandalwood splash today, and now I can't tell if the scent is from tabac or the AS. Is tabac similar to a sandalwood scent?

No sandalwood in Tabac, just a pleasant sweet, cinnamon/clove/tobacco thing. I have that splash too and I'm sure you're smelling it.
I use Tabac, like the uniqueness of it, but couldn't begin to describe the scent. Spicy is one characteristic I would say fits. The shaving soap is outstanding, as is the aftershave and cologne.

Tabac does have sandalwood in it but it's not a prominent note. I get citrus, cloves, lavender, spicy floral (geranium & carnation), moss. I don't get the leather and tobacco that others do. A little powdery and it does smell like an old time barbershop to me.

It just smells like a mild soap to me. no particular scents
The Tabac "Original", Tabac "MAN" and Tabac "MAN Silver" haven´t anything from real tobacco smell. You have to accept these as fine, elegant and masculine fragrances. The Name does the show, but isn´t authentic.
But if you like a REAL fragrance similar to an fine smell of cigar and old times, you have to try to get these!:

It´s the cheapest after-shave on the german market (1,95 EUR) and enormously popular to older AND younger men. It´s a real traditional product, since decades. Absolutely timeless, like the Palmolive shaving-stick.

They didn't name it Tabac for nothing. There is a tobacco note in their somewhere.

The Tabac "Original" is relatively near to the smell of tobacco, but with a strong "chemical" note in it.
The Tabac MAN ist more "flowery" with spicy notes.
The Tabac MAN Silver is a modern fresh, but elegant scent. And a little fruity.

And remember that the Tabac EDT and the Tabac EDC are two difference fragrances.
My experience is only with the AS and the EdC so take this for what it is worth...
I get a strong soap and powder from the Tabac original. Once it dries down some spiciness does come through a little but the powder note is still the strongest to me. My wife said I smelled like a girl to begin with and a grandpa after the dry-down. I thought I smelled like a grandma and then a grandpa
I want to try the shave soap due to the much lauded lathering but I doubt I'll go with Tabac post-shave product based on that assessment. It is very clean smelling but not a frangrance I could see myself pulling off until I have a few more miles on the clock.

Never understood what people are talking about when they say that Tabac smells like an ashtray or cigarette smoke. I've spent a fair stretch of time around both and there's not much of a resemblance... IMHO
...how about nicotine....and floral notes?
