What is the best brush to introduce

......my brother-in-law to wet shaving. He uses Gillette Foamy and cartridges. My initial challenge is to wean him from the Foamy. I will give him a container of cedar scented soap (his choice), and a brush. I have about 30 different brushes in my collection so I am able to supply almost any:
1)diameter of knot,
2) loft
3) choice of badger or boar (I have no horse, and only a couple of synthetic)

He is 70 years old and the canned goop has always been great(in his opinion).

What type and dimension of brush should I give him?
(once he is converted to "the brush" I will give him a good DE)

Let him try a few handles out and see which he likes. Everyone likes to grip it a certain way and how it feels in his hand is only something he'll know. If he is not able to sample them (not in your area), give him a few pics or play it safe with a medium sized handle.

Hybrid knot if you have one (not full bulb, not full fan).

Impossible to say since we don't know anything about his preferences in this regard. A silvertip badger may be a good choice but if he prefers boar then that's meaningless. Catch-22 is that he probably doesn't know what he prefers. Can you pick one from your collection and get his feedback to work on getting him in the right direction?

He may not like anything at this point. I guess you never know though.

I'd give him the gift of the Van Der Hagen Luxury Shave Kit. It comes with a puck of the Luxury soap, a nice mug, razor/brush stand, and a decent pure badger brush. Sure, it's not the nicest brush around, but I'm still using mine, probably hasn't lost more than half a dozen hairs in a year of use. He can branch out from there if he sticks with it.

I thank all of you for your replies. Because of your input I certainly changed my initial plan. I am giving him a salsa Bowl with 3 oz of Shaving Soap from BULK APOTHECARY (try it, it is inexpensive and (in my opinion) is as good as any other glycerin soap) scented with 'Virginian Cedarwood essential oil" with a unique(translates to cheap) mug from the Dollar Tree. I am loaning him an EverReady 750 that I restored with a TGN 20mm Super Badger Bub knot. It measures 22.4 x 49mm. i JUST TRIED IT AND MADE A GREAT CREAMY LATHER.
