What is the advantage of an open comb?

Just what the title says: what effect does an open comb have, in theory or in practice, on a shave? Would it be less, equally as, or more effective than a slant in reducing a heavy beard?

One thing is if you have several days worth of growth an open comb won't get clogged up with hair as bad as a razor with a safety bar.

I have never used a slant so I can't compare. Also not all open combs are the same. They have a reputation for being very aggressive but not all are.

The open comb is great for shaving off a lot of beard. It plows right through there, with minimal clogging, and rinses easily. For removal of a beard that has grown out long, the only thing that beats an OC is a straight.

I don't particularly see the point of a slant, myself. Most adjustables will do the job of a slant, and a slant is not going to be as good as an OC for a week or more worth of whiskers. Me, I use a straight and get whatever sort of shave I want without having to select a particular razor.

So if I'm reading this right, there's not a lot of point in getting an open comb if you're a daily shaver?

Open comb is not designed for heavy beards.
It is simply the FIRST DE razor design and is for all types of growth.
The safety bar was designed later as a cost cutting measure.
I prefer open combs like Old Type and NEW because they seem to shave closer and the blade itself hits the lather rather than the bar.

+1

It's a different model of razor, that's all.

I like the fact that you see teeth marks in the lather if your angle is off...

You don't need an aggressive razor such as the slant to get a close shave. I tried the slant and didn't like it, it was eating a lot of blades. It was efficient yes. I tried the adjustable, didn't like it either, once I find the right setting, I didn't touch it anymore... What's the point of having an adjustable then?

The Open Comb was my favorite shaver until I switched to straights...

I wouldn't say that, precisely. A lot of daily shavers use an OC razor. One reason I hear is that a solid bar pushes all the lather ahead of it, leaving latherless skin for the blade to pass over. Some feel that there is a closer interface between skin and blade with the OC. Some others prefer the solid bar, feeling it stretches the skin ahead of the blade better, and guards against nicks better. You will have to figure that out for yourself, and the best way to do that is probably to just use both types.
