What's new

What is it with Mitchell's Wool Fat?

Totally agree and although the dense foam adds a little luxury i find that i get my absolute closest shaves with the TOBS .. To your point, the foam may have nothing to do with the quality of the shave but it sure adds a nice touch to the experience. ☺
For me one of my favorite “during shave” feeling is 2nd pass with Proraso Green cream. I find if I go for a very dense lather there it makes the menthol feeling really light up. I don’t think it does anything for the post-Shave, but man does it feel nice during. That is the time where I really go for lather porn.

HA! I was chuckling for 10 minutes after reading that!
Once we get over the actual task of stubble removal, the rest can be seen as rather indulgent, and that’s ok. One could just go the wet shave route to stick it to the cartridge business and save money. I see it as an opportunity to take blade savings and apply it to enhancing the overall experience. It may very well be a little hedonistic, but honestly there are days where I spring out of bed more easily than I would otherwise because I’m looking forward to something new or satisfying in the routine.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but it's not the pursuit of of the better lather/ shave I found amusing. I "indulge" in that as well and get "irritated" (both figuratively and sometimes literally) when I can't seem to get decent results for whatever reason. I also have many soaps, creams, blades, et al that await their appointments eternal trial & error process that is the search for the perfect shaving combination.

It was just the labeling of the endeavor as "going for lather porn" that I found humorous.

No misunderstanding. I totally got it. I was just explaining why I feel no guilt indulging in lather porn, from time to time. And the term was used strictly for the sake of humor.

When it comes down to it, the soap that you have the most practice with, and have dialed in to exactly how to use in your water conditions will perform the best - even if it isn't empirically the best soap you have used.

Technique makes a HUGE difference!

So true!

I tried for the longest time to get good lather with MWF to no avail. The lather appeared thin with largish bubbles. But then I expected it to lather up on the first passes with the brush. It sounds like it requires multiple passes. Recently and for the first time I moistened TOBS Soft Milled Sandlewood with twice as much water as before, allowed the water to moisten for about 30 minutes, poured off the excess and did two "sets" of lathering and I achieved the thickest lather ever with that stuff and got a nicer BBS.

A little help please and I use a Captain Fawcett shaving brush.

It appears that with any shaving soap requiring multiple "passes" to lather, some time must be allowed to transpire in between latherings.
