What's new

What is it about SEs?

I've been wet shaving for several years. Had four DEs for the last couple years and no compulsion to buy more. Bought a Fatip a few weeks ago to see what an open comb was like. Liked the open comb but even more I liked how well supported the blade was in a three piece razor. Made me think about SEs so I bought on OCMM. I now have the OCMM, a brass GEM 1912 and a chrome Star 1912. Have a shovel head and aTreet in the mail. Bought a G bar and a GEM Jr tonight. So in less thn a month I already have more SEs than DEs. And I'm still poking around the web looking at razors. I think I need help.

But I'm getting great shaves ;-)

You're onto something and it's good.

I was the same,my favorite DE is the pre 1921 Gillette OLD Open Comb razor, they had it right way back then and the connection from open comb DE's to several SE razors from around the WW I era is real.

You are in for an amazing journey...

Part of the allure, is that they are different. Everyone usually starts with DE, and with few exceptions most look very similar. They are symmetrical and the designs if them don't vary very much. SEs on the other hand are all pretty unique looking. And the head designs are very different.

Also, as simple as they are, they give great shaves. They are actually easier to use than a DE. And once most people perfect their technique with them, they find that they can actually get better shaves with them than with DE.

It's also nice that everyone and their uncle aren't trolling eBay for SEs.

The Clog-Pruf is a fantastic razor... I love my Slants, the R41, and the DE89, but those MicroMatics are incredible.

I am thinking of declaring the first month of the year Gemuary!

Same thing happened to me. First SE shave with a pushbutton, think I had five others in a month's time. Pricing is so reasonable, when I saw one I didn't have yet on BST, it was easy to quickly send that PM to the seller and add to the collection!

The shaves are good. I really like the rigidity of the SE blades. And seeing/setying the blade angle is very intuitive whdn the blade isn't bent.

But what's weird to me is my compulsion to buy SE razors. Something about their look, the different engravings in the razor heads, the art deco handles... It all just clicks for me. Guess I was a LOSER just waiting to happen. Gotta quit buying razors though...

I can echo the "hey, they're cheap" sentiment. I bought an MMOC on a whim, then a half dozen other various 1912's and lather catchers. I don't think I've paid more than three bucks for any of them.

Once the technique is mastered (and it's pretty easy, actually. the hard part is getting used to the way a SE feels compared to a flexible DE) then shaving with it is beautiful and the blades are cheaper and last longer.

The WISE ONE has spoken.....

Right on all three sentences, Marc!

BIllC....welcome to the dark, dank, hard to find room in the basement where all us SE B&B folks sit around the 55 gal drum burning trash and mumbling "yup" and "nope" as we say things to each other like you just did in your post.....

...mostly "yup", though....unless ths subject of blades comes up.....

:biggrin1:

Welcome, and Merry Christmas,

Chris

PS-BillC-that is the COOLEST avtar!

Se shaves Nice, I Love the 1914 and 1912, There awesome shavers. Everyome should try an SE at least once in there lifetimr, the blade sits so firm in The 1914 its like getting a shave from a Barber.

What are some razors/manufacturers of SE razors that were made in the USA? I had limited my collecting to just Gillette razors, but now have started to collect EverReady razors. Just curious.

For the most part, all of the main ones were made in the US. GEM, Star, Treet and Ever-Ready were all separate divisions under the parent company, the American Safety Razor Corporation. ASR did have plants in England that made some ER and GEM razors there. Schick also had a plant in Canada that made injectors. As far as I know, all Personna and PAL injectors were made in the US as well.

Valet Auto Strop also had plants in England and Canada besides the US.
