What's new

What is a good third razor to get?

It seems like just yesterday that I started, and it's been a while since I've been here. RAD has subsided, but it is that time of year where I have to re-order supplies, such as my favorite, Mr. Taylor and some Feathers.

While I'm doing so, I was wondering what would be a good third razor.

I already have a:

Parker Butterfly style 96R
Merkur 34C Classic (which I vastly prefer to the latter)

I also have a Dovo 5/8'' Straight Razor (approaching my 1 year mark with that as well), which I use when I have extra time.

At the moment I am interested in an adjustable, something more challenging/agressive. Any suggestions (and I mean any....new creams, ASBs...the whole deal!) are welcome!

Well, you have a couple DE's and a straight so I'd say the next logical choice would be a single edge, such as a GEM 1912 or an injector.

What he said. Seriously, it's a whole new shaving experience. If you want an adjustable, you could make it an adjustable injector.

Go vintage Gillette.

You would be amazed at the value that is sitting on a shelf gathering dust at an antique mall.

Or pick something up from the BST, lots of good deals there.

Everyone needs to shave with a tech or a superspeed at least once...

Also consider a vintage Gillette like a SS, Fatboy or Slim.

Yes. Definitely. My last four days with the slim have been excellent. I can start at 3 and finish at 5 and it's been great. Much easier to maneuver under the nose than the fatboy -- it's like an adjustable medium (flare-tip) superspeed. I wish that I'd have tried one sooner.

If you really want an adjustable then get a shaver grade Fatboy. Personally as others have suggested, you should also get yourself a GEM 1912.

I'd get the Slim over the Fatboy; if for no other reason than the Slim is cheaper, and many like it better.

The Slim was my first adjustable.

Alternatively, get a Red Tip SS. It's more aggressive than a regular SS, though not adjustable.

Actually I hadn't even considered the injector, and I'm all for the new experience. I should look into that as well, though I welcome any suggestions...going vintage might be cool too.

If you want an adjustable, it's hard to go wrong with a Futur. Excellent razor and it'll be quite different from what you're used to. If not, look for a reasonably priced Fatboy. I prefer its heft to the Slim and - for whatever reason - they seem to be appreciating like crazy. Even if you don't like it (doubtful) you're not going to lose anything on it.

If you might be interested in a fixed razor, the EJ DE89L is a real favorite of mine and many others. It's one of the finest razors I own.

If you might pick up another AS, have you considered Alt-Innsbruck? The price is more than fair and I end up wearing it all the time - I can't get enough of it.

I think that if you like the merkur HD you would love a red tip superspeed or a HD rocket. Both have a nice thick handle and decent heft. I would say similar "aggression" too.

If you’re set on getting an adjustable, I would go with a Fatboy or Slim. Both are good performers and Slims seem to be less costly than some Fatboy’s of recent past. If you want a milder razor I’d go with the EJ DE89L or Muhle R89.
