What's new

What have I done?

Well, I just won an auction on the bay and I need help. Not as badly as this razor needs, but maybe it'll clean up nice. What in the world is it is what I want to know? It's in Germany and appears to be open comb. Other than that I haven't a clue. Considering it's location I'm guessing it's going to be a Merkur. Can anyone identify it?

Wow, that looks like quite a project! I'm afraid I can't be of any help identifying it, but I would love to see what you manage to get out of it once it's cleaned up. Maybe there's an insignia on the head or handle buried under all of that crud.

It ended up costing me under $7 shipped. Not sure how long it'll take to get from Germany to Alabama.
I plan on tackling it with an electric toothbrush. Mike said that crud's protective. Hope that's the case. If I can't clean it with a toothbrush I'll try soaking it over night in denture cleaner. Then maybe alcohol or peroxide.

It's supposed to have shipped air mail out of Germany on Monday. Friday now and it's not here yet. Anyone here had any experience with this? Getting excited.

It can take a month to get stuff across the pond, so don't get worried yet. Also, be VERY CAREFUL cleaning that. Nothing harsh, like vinegar or bleach. That has a suspiciously familar look. Won't say what, could be wrong, but just be careful cleaning it. After some scrubbing bubbles, you might want to research the tin foil and hot water method.

I plan to continue with this post as things progress. Still don't have a clue as to what it is. I've looked through most if the pics that the BOTOC have posted and nada. Doesn't appear to have either rings or a bulb on the end. Looks kinda long too but it may just be the angel that the pic was taken.

The shiniest, best looking fat boy I ever came across was covered in 1/4 inch of soap scum. You may have a winner.

Well, ya win some, ya lose some. Considering the price guess I'll call it a draw on this venture. Let's call it a Snaggletooth since I really don't know what it is. On the barrel I can make out the word Double and under it, the word Extra. The tube is split and one side of the head is busted up. Of course you know I saved with that other side, just to see. To bad. It would have been a great shaver. I did a 3 pass shave with the good side and really liked it. More aggressive than a Tech, SS, DB89 or a Lord. Less aggressive than an R41 or a Fufur. That's about all I can compare it to. Not to fear though. I've ordered a Fatip, and against my better judgement I ordered a Weishi 9306 to replace a SS I piffed to a guy at work. Probably be to mild for me and get piffed too.
Anyway folks, here's the pics. Anybody recognize this Snaggletoothed monster?

Shame about the comb on one side. Looks like it needs replating. By no means an expert but looks very Gillette like to me but I would have thought someone would have identified it by now. If its as old as it looks and German could easily be made by some small German metal works. Please keep us up to date with what you find out.
