what have I bought?

have bought a vinatge gillette off ebay, serial number C120786. i havent received it yet, does anyone have any idea of when it was made etc?

This is it thought Id take a punt for a fiver. If it doesnt work out so be it. Box looks like its seen better days, hoipefully the razor will clean up OK.

Old Type was the first safety razor patented for Gillette, back in 1904 (I think). What you see is what you get. Open comb, three-piece design. A lot of people really like them.

Just make sure the blade stays perfectly aligned when you tighten it down.

thank you. will scrubbing bubbles (or our english equivalent) be safe to use on silver plate?

does the C serial number mean anything? one site i found suggests that serial numbers C80509 to C260238 (mine falls in the middle) corresponds to 1912 - any idea if this is true?

Very nice old single ring . . . and if I factor the exchange rate correctly, you got it for a right fair price . . .

It should be silver plated . . . the aluminum foil/baking soda trick will do wonders for it. Best of all, it should be a nice shaver to boot!! Enjoy!

thanks for the help guys, will post pictures of it when its cleaned up! not sure the box can be salvaged - looks like the closing press stud has gone, so might keep an eye out for a new box.

Awesome find, and nice snag! You pretty much stole it, and it looks like it cleaned up really nicely. I haven't had the opportunity to shave with a Single Ring yet, but I love my Ball End Handle Old Type. Enjoy!

Very good price for a very nice 1912 Single Ring (if it is a US version)

Hold on to that box, even though it is damaged, they are very very hard to come by.
