What grit of stone for bevel?

I have been using a King 1200 hone to set a bevel. I can get the razor to cut some hair at skin level, but it doesn't get any better than that. I thought I would try to use a lower grit hone. Would be interested in knowing what people use for this purpose. How low can a person go? 200?

Thanks

Depends on the shape of the razor. I usually set a bevel on a DMT 1.2k as it is nice and quick. I can drop to the 600 if necessary. Then I go over it with the Chosera 1k as that smooths things out extremely well.

I have a DMT 600/1200 that I use for setting bevels. The 600 side saves time, but isn't a necessity.

1k is an accepted standard but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. 1.2 will normally work fine. The DMT should be a fast cutter for you. But for basket cases with huge dings or chips in the blade, don't be bashful about breaking out the big guns to save time. I use a cheap 200 grit diamond hone for a lot of my heavy edge repair.

Short answer whatever it takes.

For most I use a JNS 1K stone, I also have a large Botan Nagura that I hone on and set bevels with.

I have been known to get the DMT 325 for some.

For most razors I go to DMT 325 to set a fast bevel. Then either progress right to a Chosera 1K or sometimes use the 600 DMT in between.

For me, it depends on the blade. My standard bevel setter would be between 1k and 1200, but I'll go as low as a DMT 220 if needed.

Thanks guys. Actually, I've got a 220/325 Duosharp that I use for lapping water stones. So maybe a 600/1200 Diasharp would be in order here, for "snappy" bevel-setting. Thing is, the only Diasharp combo they make is 6x2.

I'll be honest, I've even used the DMT credit card before. I had one I wanted to break in to serve as a nagura for my jnats. Use one of those for a while and the 6x2 will feel like a runway. :)

I do not mean to disrupt this thread but see all the responses saying they use a DMT to set a bevel, I just have to ask a question. What does it sound like running a razor across a DMT?
