What's new

What double-edge razor blade am I missing?

After trying a small handful of sharper blades, I've decided to order a bulk pack of Treet Platinums. They've consistently given me a close, clean, almost irritation free shave time and again.

I say "almost" because I'm still working on my technique, but I get very little razor burn, razor bumps, nicks, cuts, or weepers from them. Just a smooth clean shave. Even with a clean up pass on my notoriously sensitive neck.

Quite a list you have there. I notice you don't have Eddison Stainless included. I find them very sharp and smooth. And fairly cheap.. They are my current favorite. I got mine from RBC.

Will look for em! Thanks.

Hello,

Many of the blades you have listed do not work well for me and some others are excellent. If you could indicate your favorites and least liked within the list, it might be easier to make recommendations. Given that your list includes many of the less aggressive blades and you do not seem to like Feathers, my guess is that you tend to prefer milder blades.

For me the Derbys, Sharps and Sharks tug too much and the Feather is too rough to start and dulls too quickly. The Personna's nick too much and the Lord blades are either marginal or too dull. The German Wilkinson Sword is great if stropped and useless without foam stropping, and the Indian Wilkinson Sword (Gillette Wilkinson Sword) is not smooth enough and dulls quickly.

The listed blades that I like are the Gillette Platinum, Rubie and Nacet. If you like those, you might also like the Wizamet Super Iridium and the PolSilver Super Iridium. The Polsilver has been discontinued, but is still available in small quantities. My understanding is that the Wizamet has also been discontinued, but it is still available in larger quantities. I have never given samples of the Super Iridium blades to anyone who has disliked them, but I am currently fascinated with the Gillette Rubie and the new version of the Gillette Platinum. The Rubie might be the most forgiving blade that I have used and the Platinum is by far the smoothest. I know that you listed the Platinum, but the one I particularly like is pictured below.

One other blade that you might enjoy is the Gillette Super Thin (Thai Version). Initially, I was very impressed with that blade, but I now prefer the previously mentioned blades.

As I get to the end of my supply of Gillette Platinum Plus, I’m thinking I should get the above Gillette Platinum. I had tried the dark blue/white package Gillette Platinum a while ago and didn’t think much of them, but it sounds like these are different.

I like the Rainbow Stainless. Sharper than a Lord Plat but smoother than an Asco Red. Good blade.

On your recommendation, I did pick up the Asco red. Looking forward to trying them. I very much like the Asco orange.

I have never tried the ones in the dark blue package, but these European ones are superb I both my mild and more aggressive razors. If you decide to use them, let us know if you detect a difference.

If your open to some Vintage or discontinued blades that you can still get from the auction sites, some of the best shaves I have gotten are from these blades and was fortunate to be able to stock up on these:

Gillette “Spoilers” Super Stainless
Gillette Platinum Plus
Gillette Platinum Plus ( grey box) made in Brazil
Gillette Rubie Platinum Plus
Schick Plus Platinum
Polsilver Stainless Wizamet

These are some of best blades I’ve used and try to grab them whenever I could.

How would you say the Gillette Platinum Plus (made in Brazil) stack up against vintage Gillettes? I tried one yesterday and wasn't blown away by it, but am wondering if I should give it a few more shaves to sharpen up before moving on.

Over time, I've been picking up quite a few double-edge razor blades. I generally buy a few from Try-a-Blade and if I like it, I'll pick up 50 or 100.

I have many now, but I'm starting to wonder.. am I missing a real gem that I haven't encountered yet?

Here's a comprehensive list of what I have so far:

Derby Usta
Derby Premium
Gillette Wilkinson Sword (Chinese)
Wilkinson Sword (Germany)
Sharp Titanium
Sharp Hi Chromium
Sharp Hi Platinum
Shark Super Stainless
Shark Super Chrome
Shark Platinum
Bic Astor
Bic Chrome Platinum
Astra Super Stainless
Lord Silver Star
Lord Asco Super Stainless
Lord Super Stainless
Lord Platinum
Gillette Silver Blue
Gillette Platinum
Gillette Rubie
Gillette Perma-Sharp
Gillette Nacet
Gillette 7 O'clock Super Platinum
Timor Stainless
Voshkod
Personna Israeli Red
Viking Sword Stainless (Israel)
Personna Med Prep
Personna Comfort Coated Stainless
Kai Stainless Steel
Super Max Blue Diamond Titanium

I have a number of loose tucks of blades from sampler packs that I've ordered in the past, but haven't used yet. These I do not have in any sizeable quantity.

So...with the exception of Astra SP and Feather...which I've tried and have no interest in...what gem have I missed?

Thanks for your post in advance.
A beautiful list! I don't see the German Muhle blades - I like them a lot

Thanks for the recommendation. I have a few tucks of them somewhere. I haven't purchased them in quantity yet. Will pull out a tuck and give them a try.

As you know with blades YMMV plays a huge role with the types of blades that works well for you, although the Gillette Platinum Plus (Brazil) was quite a delight when I started using it since I wasn’t expecting much from it. The blades are somewhat thinner or more flexible compared to the other blades I use. I noticed it works best on razors that hold the blade “rigid “ and I avoid using it with any razors that has a “gap” so for a more aggressive shave I would settle with more blade exposure as opposed to an increase in blade gap which causes the blade to flutter especially with thinner blades such as the Gillette Platinum Plus (Brazil) .

It is somewhat similar to the Gillette Platinum in the light blue box since they are both thinner and more flexible but I find the Platinum Plus to be sharper and smoother and lasts longer compared to the Gillette Platinum’s.

They work great on Gillette New Short and Long open Combs as well as the Gillette Tech and any razor with similar features that holds the blade without any “fluttering” . I love them on my open comb slant Bakelite which is an aggressive razor and being quite light I could shave with several days of growth paired with the Gillette Platinum Plus (Brazil) just going through the motions without any pressure, just enough to where the guard touches your face and the hair just starts falling off.

I would avoid razor heads like the DE 89 and the Merkur heads and it’s copies that leaves gaps and causes the blade to “flutter “.

The vintage Platinum Plus would work better in these types of razor heads, although I just avoid these razor heads no matter what blade I use.

I actually prefer the Gillette Spoilers Super Stainless compared to the vintage Platinum Plus and slightly favor the Schick Plus Platinum to the Gillette vintage Platinum Plus.

YMMV I would keep trying the Gillette Platinum Plus (Brazil) with different razors I think they are great blades.

Good luck!

You should try Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless, Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge and Personna Crystals.
Oh, by the way, you also missed Astra SP and Feather.
For the Russian made Gillette blades, you better hurry. You never know what future has in store for you.

I recently tried some Gillette Perma-sharp and was very impressed with them. Strongly recommend them to try out if your enjoying variety.
