What does Florida Water aftershve smell like? Please don't say water in Florida ;

I saw some at my local Walgreens for less than 5 bucks and have seen a few guys mention it. It looked pretty old school.

Hard to describe. It does smell old-school with a perfumy slightly musk scent. Very masculine and doesn't last long and has you wishing it won't fade. Definitely worth the $5 price of admission.

I remember when I was a kid in the 70s going to a real barber shop and having the barber put florida water on my neck after a hair cut. It did smell good! Can't remember it well enough to attempt a description though.

Honestly, and I mean this in a good way. Smell gummy coke bottles the next time you're in a bulk candy shop. Florida Water smells a lot like that. And as someone who really enjoys some of the finer fragrance houses out there like Chanel, Nassamotto, Malle and Lutens, I have to say that I love Florida Water and will never take it out of my rotation. I even just bought the shaving soap by Mama Bear. Good stuff.

I've been curious about this for a while and finally picked some up. My initial impression was not positive. Yes, there's some citrus there -- it did strike me at first as being akin to another old-school eau de cologne, 4711.

However, I like 4711 better. There's some other sweetness going on with the Florida Water that I find cloying, and unlike what others have found, it's been lingering. This is coming from someone whose sense of smell is not good.

I'm not going to give up on it yet. I will cut it with witch hazel and try it as an AS.

PS: After reading a bit more, I think I applied the FW too liberally this morning. A few dabs appears to be what's in order.

I find that it smells very sweet and like citrus. Not a specific type of citrus, just citrus in general. I really like it. I know others have said that it doesn't last long, but I disagree (or maybe I am using too much). I can smell it on my clothes and hands well into the day.

I wish I could find some locally but if not I'll probably just toss some in the cart the next time I order from a company who has it.

I use Florida Water and 4711 together! It is amazing together. Keep some together in the fridge and apply it while it is cold.

I get mine at Amazon when I need to bump up the order for free shipping.

To the OP, lo these many years ago ( ): very spicy citrus with almost (ALMOST, I tell you) too much clove.

I love it. It has good ju-ju, and it's got the burn that will tell you your shave wasn't as good as you thought it was. :w00t:

Your local Walmart probably has it. It is usually on a very top top shelf in a section that has some random ethnic products. I get it for about $3. If you use the Walmart web application it may tell you the isle number (it won't make sense if you think of it as an aftershave, think more beauty or ritual product). I find it to be a pleasant if somewhat sharp scent. Definitely a high alcohol content so it FEELS as such. To me It is mostly floral with some citrus and clove tones. If the scent lingers it is easy to ignore or get lost in other scents.
Definitely worth adding to your cabinet for $3-4 if you can find it at Wally World.

Fragrance-wise, its sort of a Lemon/Lime with a hint of mint, if that makes sense. If Gatorade were an aftershave, that is what FW is like.

It smells great, its very refreshing, and it moisturizes and tones up the skin.

Sadly, I can't use it anymore. Whenever I used FW, it would give me vivid nightmares every time. I was having the kind of dreams that would jolt me awake in a cold sweat. Once I figured out the pattern, I stopped using the FW, and the nightmares went away.

i wouldn't call mine nightmares, but I have had occasions at night when I use FV right before bed when I would have very strange vivid dreams that would be unpleasant enough to interrupt my sleep. It occurs enough that I am fully aware of the risk if I use it at night, it is a conscious choice to do so. Because it smells so wonderful and I I don't have dreams, I sleep soundly in a deep sleep.

Unless it's a bigger bottle, $5 is on the high side. I find it in West Indian or African grocery stores for $3. Often it is the ONLY "shaving" product in the store, so I assume that most of the purchases are not for shaving.

I like it for a summer aftershave. I would describe it has "citrus-y" but without being sweet or cloying. It's like any other scent, it may or may not work for you and the only to know is to try it.

Interesting. Those who use Florida Water ritually says it promotes "good vibey" sort of things and generally use of it is particuarly recommended to REDUCE nightmares and support good sleep.

NMy own experience with nightmares is that they are very important and ought to be paid much attention. Generally, they indicate the "bubbling to the surface" of deep issues, highly suppressed fears and memories, and things that one needs to examine, work out, and comes to terms with.

That is to say, that if there is anything at all to the widespread ritual use of Florida Water, the fact that, in your case, it seems to be causing nightmares would be considered not just a matter of passing interest, but highly significant. As my take is that nightmares by themselves are highly significant, I'd look into all this a bit deeper if it was me.

About six years ago, I started having screaming nightmares, essentially re-living the details of the physical abuse and beatings I suffered as a child. I knew, intellectually, this had occurred, but thought I had forgotten the details. No, turns out they were all still in there. A few therapy sessions really helped. At least I'm at a truce with the issues, I suppose..at any rate the nightmares stopped.

Florida Water: the choice of Santeria novitiates! It IS easily found in South Florida bodegas and markets.

I'll try the nighttime application thing; do a controlled experiment.

I know it's a great splash; sadly it's gone five minutes later (it seems to me. YMMVAA).
