What's new

what do you think of this straight for a newbie?

Good vendor, nice razor, but slow down for a starter razor.

Get a shave ready one here or on straightrazorplace.com.

140 bones is a decent amount. You could most likely get a razor and strop for that, less even, depending on the particulars.

ruprazor.com
and
whippeddog.com

get favorable reviews for their newbie setups.

Or post a WTB in the BST forum. Someone will hook you up I'm sure. There are members here that have a seemingly endless
supply of straight and straight related stuff to sell.

That razor would be fine. The only thing to be aware of is that your gold wash will fade over time as the razor is stropped. This is just a cosmetic issue and doesn't effect the razor itself.

The razors from Vintageblades are "presharpened" and they are shave ready right away. I believe Lyn Abrams does the sharpening for Jim. You might also consider this starter set that Jim offers. You might want to consider upgrading the 2" strop to a 3" strop. With the 2" strop you'll need to strop in an "X pattern". The 3" strop doesn't require the X-pattern be used. I believe his VB strops are the same as SRD's strops, just branded with the VB logo. I have owned one and it is a very good strop that works well.

FWIW, Jim is great to deal with and provides excellent customer service.

I got hooked up on B/S/T and the guy wasn't even selling the razor I got. He just wanted to help out a newbie and fellow contributor....Thanx again Jared

Tough Call.

When i bought my first razor, i went with a simple razor because i figured there would be a significant chance that i would drop it, bang it against the sink, or otherwise destroy it. Although it is still possible that i will do those things, I have made some decent progress in shaving and my razor has survived.

For the record, i did drop my razor once when i was stropping it. It landed on carpet and doesn't seem to be any worse for wear. From what i have read, dropping your razor has the potential to be a game ender for a razor so i got pretty lucky.

Now i own a razor that i like, but is lacking somewhat aesthetically.

How many razors do you plan on buying? If you're thinking that you are only going to buy one (be honest with yourself), then maybe you should just buy the one you want and be done with it. I thought i was going to only buy one razor, but I have opened myself up to the possibility of having one new razor and one vintage razor. There are a couple of vintage razors calling my name at an antique store as I write this.

+1 on the BST. You want a shave ready razor for a decent price till you know if it is for you or not.
There's always time to buy big ticket.

Listen to the advice of Walker above;

He went to Jared!

I also vote for BST.

The razor there is a good one but something from BST will be much cheaper. If you don't like it, it will be easy to sell and you didn't pay much to start with!

Don't forget the strop!

I only planned on buying one.
All I can say now is, I've only bought one NEW one. :wink2:

My first was a "simpler" new Dovo, which I love and still use.. but if I had it to do over, I'd go the B/S/T route as suggested above.

When I started, I bought a new Dovo, an Ebenholz from classicshaving, again, legitimately presharpened, and about the same price range.

I don't have a pile of experience buying razors off of the forums, either here or at SRP. However, they are both pretty stand-up crowds, and razors can often be had for quite a bit less.

All that said, I don't regret the route I took. New Dovo's are nice razors, I think a solid choice for anyone, newbie or not. And good call on the round tip, my Prima Klang drew a lot less blood with a rounded point than my spike point Ebenholz.

The one mistake I did make was not getting a proper strop right off the bat. When my technique was still questionable, it would have been nice to know the the razor was sharp, and the irritation was my fault, not the dull razors fault.

Hope this helps some, take care and have fun.

Derek

So far I have one straight in hand, one on the way, and 2 stropes all for 84.00 and a Merkur Futur which I don't use anymore. Both razors shave-ready. All courtesy of B/S/T. And all from members that are more than willing to help newbies like myself get the proper equipment at a more than fair price. Most are not in it for the profit, they're just wanting to help people out and get there money back so they can buy more shave gear like the rest of us. Well, I've stroked there fur long enough.lol
