Okay I got my basic starter straight and strop. The blade is 5/8 hollow and clean with no chips or wear. It cannot shave the hair on my arms but I am making my way through the stickies at the moment. Is it possibe to get this razor shave ready with the right tubes of paste and my current strop? I'd like to do it myself but not commit to a hone just yet until I really know what I'm doing.
What do you recommend?

very likely not.
if it can't shave at all you'll need a fairly coarse hone to be able to remove enough metal. and that's if it's decent steel to start with
