What's new

What do you keep your Straights in?

My fiancé has been kind enough to buy me my second straight razor(not sure which one yet because I gave her 3 to choose from) and it got me to thinking about what I should store/display my growing collection in?
I looked at Pipe stands, but also came across some ink pen display boxes that would look nice. I am not sure if the pen display box would be long enough.
So, I wanted to see what everyone else was using?

Thanks and if this is already discussed some where else I apologize.

If you're handy, cigar boxes are easily converted into razor storage boxes with some thin plywood, carpenter's glue, and cloth or felt  (as a plus, you can make room for plenty of future acquisitions!)

Pens tend to be a bit over 5" and razors vary but usually 6" to 6.5 or so. The pens look like a tight fit in that case.

For pipe stands and pen cases, you need to check the sizes first. I have a pipe stand that razors won't fit into, and I went to Woodcraft to check out a pen case they had there (brought a test razor and the case was too short). Toothbrush stants can also work, as can test tube stands.

You can make your own stand, its not that difficult.
By a pice a wood (for ex. a shelf), cut it up and screw it together, drill holes fo wood cylinders (called dyvler in Denmark), hammer them in, and there you go.

Thanks Pastor. I think I might steal your idea because then I could stain the wood to match the cabnets in the bathroom. Maybe the Misses will let me keep it out if I do that.

The hole size on most pipe stands is 7/8", barely big enough to hold a 5/8 blade. I had an old "4-holer" with 1" closed holes that I used and most of my 5/8 razors would fit when placed in the hole through the top. I have a couple that would only fit when placed in the stand tang first, through the bottom of the hole.

I find that 6/8 and larger blades won't fit into the closed hole at all.

When I bought my current razor/pipe stand opted for one with "open holes" that could hold any size blade.

In the photo, the first and third razors from the left are sized 6/8 and 7/8, respectively. All the other are 5/8.

Check out this vendor's listings on eBay. All prices are BIN, so I think I'm OK in posting this link.

I am not advocating/endorsing/recommending that you purchase any of his wares, just look at what he offers to get an idea of what's available.

BTW, I purchased my stand from a different vendor.

Thanks for the site Harry. I love your stand especially with the drawer on the bottom. I will give the site a look over, but now I think I am going to turn my attention over to pipe stands instead of the pen case.

I keep the ones I am not using stored away in a cabinet and do not have them in any kind of display case. Those I am using I keep in antique coffee mugs, one mug for shave-ready razors and the other for razors that need stropping. Both mugs are ebay purchases and are from 1928 (on left) and 1927 (on right). I find this to be very handy.

The razors I'm currently using I keep in a leather tray. It makes it easy to pick and allows them to dry properly. I don't have any logic to my rotation. Most of my razors not in use live in a three tier jewelry box. Others are kept in their boxes in a drawer.

And just in case anyone has any ideas I've included pictures of my home defense team. And no, they're not dead... That's energy conservation mode.

That is a nice collection of razors Kevin, but the security team tops them all. I have two of my own, a beagle and a pit. The beagle is my alarm system and main line of defense. The pit is the emergency backup.

I use a wooden cigar box that has a lid with a little catch on it, which makes for a fairly tight closure, and a plastic/sort of velvetish liner that once held six individual cigars where the slots happen to fit my straights fairly nicely. I poured a bunch of white rice under the plastic liner and scattered anti-moisture packets around on top of the liner.

My theory is that I wanted my straights handy and easily accessible in my bathroom, but in a very low humidity environment. It seems to work. Of course, I hang my strops well away from my bathroom in my walk-in closet, so having my razors near where I actually shave does not accomplish all that much!

I was doing a Google search earlier and came across twocousinpiperacks.com and saw all the great furniture that they build to display pipes so I contacted Mark.
Turns out he is a safty razor guy, but had never thought about using one of his stands to hold Straight Razors.
After a few emails he is going to take one of his current designs and add a drawer and use a darker stain, but it is going to look something like this...
