what do the number on Derby blades mead?

I'd read, somewhere around here, of folks who flip a blade after a few shaves. Their contention is that flipping a blade to the 'B' side gives you better shaves, once the 'A' side is depleted.

If that be the case, the 1 & 2 are for the 'A' side, and the 3 & 4 are to keep track of the 'B' side ...
 
I think everyone wonders what those numbers are about when they first see them - I certainly did! This very site offers a carefully considered explanation:

On another forum I recently saw a post saying that in the case of Derby the numbers are used to identify the four grinders used in blade production; if there's a problem with a batch they immediately know where to look.

Haha this is what I call a necromancer :)
Anyway I'm pretty sure the numbers represent the four grinding wheels. Once there is a quality issue it's easy to find out and replace och fix the wheel.
