Was traveling on business Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Shaved late Tuesday night so road shaves were Thursday and Friday.

Decided to check one bag, so was able to bring a DE razor and blades.

Kit was identical for both days:

20200118_151628~2.jpg

The razor is the first Frankenrazor I tried - inexpensive PD04 razor from eBay with a Merkur top cap. Smooth and predictable shaves. Everything in my travel kit works really well plus is not expensive if someone gets "sticky fingers".

Shave 20200116 (Day 1)

Continuing my 2020 Resolution to stop chasing BBS!

Prep: Splashed water on face
Brush: Yaqi 22mm Tuxedo
Soap: Pinaud Clubman
Razor: Frankenrazor: P0D4 Razor + Merkur Top Cap
Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (1)
Post-shave: Crystal Alum Stick
Aftershave Balm: Stetson
Aftershave: Bootlegger's El Dorado

WTG and XTG. Minor touch-up and buffing.

DFS with no weepers, nicks, cuts or irritation.

Nice smooth, efficient shave. No pressure needed. Touch-up and buffing produced no irritation.

Shave 20200117 (Day 2)

Continuing my 2020 Resolution to stop chasing BBS!

Prep: Splashed water on face
Brush: Yaqi 22mm Tuxedo
Soap: Pinaud Clubman
Razor: Frankenrazor: P0D4 Razor + Merkur Top Cap
Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (2)
Post-shave: Crystal Alum Stick
Aftershave Balm: Stetson
Aftershave: Bootlegger's El Dorado

WTG and XTG. Minor touch-up and buffing.

DFS with no weepers, nicks, cuts or irritation.

Day 2 with the travel set. Another nice smooth, efficient shave. No pressure needed. Touch-up and buffing produced no irritation.

Really nice travel set! :)

YMMV

  • Haslinger Schafmilch + Marigold is a good combo that practically lathers itself
  • Did not want to over-shave with an unfamiliar blade, so only two passes + clean-up for today

Just curious, why do you use two alcohol splashes? I have that same Thayers Lemon Astringent, and added a few menthol crystals to mine.

Thanks for asking. Thayers Lemon for me is more of a refreshing splash...no burn. I hardly feel any alcohol from it. I like some burn aftershave feel and thus used both...weird I know I am..

Aye is the soap reminiscent of Gum?

Decided to try something new today. There‘s still a few untried blades out of my original sample pack bought when I started wet shaving almost a year ago. So, today, I opened a pack of Rapira SuperStainless, and used them with Maggard V3A and Soap Commander Courage.

It is not the sharpest blade in the world. The blades I’m used to - Feathers, Astras, Derby Premium - are all sharper and more efficient. It required a little more cleanup. But the resulting shave was absolutely problem free and smooth. No irritation or red spots or scratches I used to get with dull blades.

So, not a bad experience at all, although I am not sure how long it’s going to last if it already feels as a well used Astra on 1st shave.

Solid 7 out of 10. Perhaps 8.

How did your Derby premium compare to feather and Astra? Course beard and head shaver asking 👀

Not on the same level as Feather.

Slightly less sharp than Astra but very close. I’d say in the same general league overall.

Put it this way - not my #1 blade but I would have no problem using only Derby Premiums if I had no other choice.

One razor they absolutely shine in is Razorock German 37 Slant. I actually prefer Derby in it over Astra or Feather.
