Razor : Ever-Ready 1914 little lather catcher. Mfg 1914-17, mid range. Very nice razor with great audio feedback for that time era.
Blade : Gem Personna SS PTFE (4) Very sharp, excellent longevity, smooths out nicely, predictable + safest blade to handle.
Soap : Razorock Irish Countryside (similar to Irish Creed), nice cologne scented with excellent lather qualities. Top tier lather IMO.
Brush : Yaqi "Orbital ring" 24mm boar bristle. Very nice enjoyable boar brush.

First shave with my new Ares. Lambda razors are imbued with magic, at least that’s how they feel. The combination of aesthetic beauty, groundbreaking design and expert craftsmanship is…..well….magical. My first impressions are the blade feel is higher than the Athena, but still comfortable, the clamping is similarly best-in-class, and the efficiency is at least as high. More to follow as I get more shaves under my belt. The blade reveal is the narrowest I’ve ever seen, although this might be counterbalanced by the open comb which allows more reveal underneath. Frankly, it belongs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Smithsonian. A masterwork. BBS/BBS-

Would have been an almost perfect shave but my grip slipped while I was shaving under my jawline so I got a decent size nick on my neck.

Today’s shave was a breeze! Everything went smoothly, making the entire experience refreshing and effortless. I do feel like the blade is slowing down slightly as the shave is not quite as close as yesterday's shave, but it is a matter of degrees.

Today's (2024-10-31) shave:
  • Rockwell 6S + R3 base plate + BIC Chrome Platinum (#9)
  • TOBS "Traditional" Super Badger 24mm (XL)
  • Mix of D.R. Harris Lavender, Windsor and Marlborough shaving soap left-overs, grated for bowl lathering
  • T&H 1805 Aftershave Balm
Contrary to my previous shave, such a smooth shave again. The BIC Chrome Platinum blade still going strong on its 9th shave, though I'm likely pushing my luck. Although I'm 3017-ing my TOBS St James cream, turned into a hard soap after not using for 10+ years, I'm again realizing D.R. Harris' triple milled shaving soaps to be such excellent performers. I'm definitely more enjoying the post shave feel compared to the TOBS St James cream, despite the latter one being an excellent performer as well. It's not as if it's uncomfortable, on the contrary, it's just that D.R. Harris feels "nicer" on the skin afterwards. Difficult to explain.

I also finally used my TOBS "Traditional" Super Badger 24mm (XL) shaving brush that I bought back in 2013 in their St James store in London. It's not anything special at all, is actually quite floppy, and not dense at all. Nevertheless: it whipped up a lather easily and flow-through was more than adequate.

Again a very nice 2-pass shave (WTG + XTG), with minor touch-ups. No nicks, weepers or razor burn. 9/10

Concluding Tabactober, 2024 edition, with 41 shaves on this old puck over the course of the month between face and head. I bought the puck in mid 2021. I'm not sure if it's the tallow formula or the 2021 veggie version. I reckon I'd used about half the puck before the start of this month, though that's a rough guess at best. I broke through the bottom of the puck a few days back. After mashing the soap back down to a consistent layer (it's quite hydrated at this stage), I guess there could be close to another month left in the thing.

What did I learn?

Tabac is great! I could easily be happy with Tabac as my only soap. Getting its best lather requires a little more water than I was using for it, before this month, but once you get it right it's as rich and slick as anything. And I love the peppery, powdery barbershop scent — though it's quite tame, by now, in the lifecycle of this puck. I'll look forward to breaking out a fresh puck and trying the 2024 formula once this one's done. (On that topic: I'd guess this puck is probably the 2021 veggie formula, but I'm not too concerned about tallow versus veggie in any case. There are some truly great veggie soaps out there, and I trust the Tabac master awk_m4, among others, that Tabac pulled off the transition.)

I started on breaking in two new boar brushes this month — a Semogue Asylum from Bullgoose Shaving and an Omega Jade from Connaught. No matter what, it's just an uphill battle for the first 10-15 shaves, until the brush starts to open up a bit. And of course it's still a ways to go from there before the brush truly comes into its own. Through rotating brushes against the one soap over the month, I've reassessed my earlier view of the Semogue C7 boar knot. It nicely complements the SOC. Just different enough to be interesting. The "half-hive" Asylum looks great, but the Pegasus handle works better. Hoping Semogue eventually comes out with a black resin, silver ring version.

Even fully dialed in with a soap, I'll pay the price for rushing a lather. Mornings are a bit chaotic these days with our kids, but it's always going to be worth the extra 1–2 minutes to get the lather just right.

Coincidentally, I also ended up using only one blade this month, the Indian Wilkie ("Saloon Pack"). Also great! Over five weeks with one soap and one blade, I got a great comparison between the various razors used. Winner: Edwin Jagger 3ONE6. I'll need a sight longer to truly run a full bracket (my razor drawer overfloweth), but I've been impressed by the degree to which the 3ONE6 consistently pulls ahead of the competition.

Finally: This was fun, and offered good perspective. I don't have the appetite to 3017 anything, but I'll definitely try a few more one-month commitments.

Halloween shave in the cast iron melting pot. This thing actually works well. Maybe I should cut the handle and make it a proper shaving cauldron.

6/10. DFS, but there is some irritation. Unfortunately, I rushed this one. NS/SN with the straight. I ended up finishing the shave with a Gem razor. I can't blame the gear, or the edge @steveput on my Wade and Butcher straight. The first pass was very nice, but I should've stopped there.
