What's new

What did you learn from your last shave?

Don't assume you've nailed the angle of attack until you've properly tried a few variations. I went just a little more shallow this morning and achieved BBS a lot earlier than expected. Time to reprogram the muscle memory!

i found out that I'm a bit allergic to the boars. They gave me a lot of irritation. Switching to a Badger made a world of difference.

Synthetics are very agreeable to my face and I have had little impetus to branch out, but I started to read Allessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed so pairing Saponificio Varesino with an Italian boar brush seemed like a fun idea. I also wanted to determine whether my past issues with the brush were due to the technique or material. I now have even less motivation to give badger another shot than I did previously... and I am OK with that.

I have been over tightening my Razorock SLOC which I didn't realize was possible. When I tighten it I always get it tight instead of just snug. When it's tight the blade sits flat against the base plate. While I get smooth shaves that way they aren't close without extra work. Today I just got it snug and the blade was slightly parted from the base plate. I got a closer shave on a two-passer than I normally get on a three-pass shave with that razor.

I also learned that I like Cella much more than Proraso when it comes to slickness and holding a lather.

Adjust your Progress razors when your hands are dry. I assembled my Mergress with wet hands and thought I was shaving at the 2.5 mark. Turns out I adjusted it after the razor was opened one full turn. The 2.5 mark was actually 5+! Ouch.

There is a difference between a Feather Popular and Feather ASD2 .... the latter seemingly a closer shave with no irritation

That after a week using GD soap, one shave this morning with M&M soap leads me to conclude that M&M is superior in performance, post-shave and value.

That razor blades really do make a big difference in the shave. I used a new Nacet in my GC .84 today instead of the Derby extra I had used the last 2 times. What a huge difference!

+1! Getting a good blade to pair with a particular razor makes a HUGE difference!! :a14::a14:

I tried a Voskhod blade for the first time this morning in my GC .68 instead of my usual Shark SS. It seemed to be every bit as sharp and close-shaving as the Shark but very noticeably smoother, and the post-shave feel is more comfortable than normal.

Newbie here! Using zero pressure with the correct angle gets exceedingly better results than some pressure at a close angle.

Also, created an awesome, thick, peaky lather with Williams today. Great cushion and slickness. Just left the face a little dry which some AS can handle.

Some days, everything just goes right and today was one of those days. First use Feather blade in my Timeless Titanium 0.68; MWF on a Rudy Vey/Shavemac 2 band, followed by Dickinson's WH and Floid Vigoroso. Could not have hoped for a better combination.

I was afraid of Feathers for years, but decided to give it a shot when I needed to add a small amount to an order for free shipping. Today, I find nothing to fear with the Feather blades, perhaps I was wise to wait and not venture into Feather territory too soon, or maybe I was needlessly afraid. In any case, the Feather and Timeless are a great combination for me.

Marco's Method for lathering really does work and I like Gillette 7 O'Clock, greens. Also, proraso white soap is pretty good after all!

Over the past few days...
  • Astra SS blades may be just as good as Astra SP after all. I corked this one, so it may be an unfair comparison.
  • A vintage-style scuttle works fairly well with a puck of Williams, if you use it the way it was meant to be used, by pouring recently boiled water over it from a teakettle. Don't try for lather porn because there's no room for it.
  • The handle on a Stirling 2-Band Synthetic is officially my favourite. I rather like the knot too.

I hated Proraso White until I added some Gillette "Pure" cream to it.
Cremo works well as an additive too, but the scent is not quite as nice, IMO.

While I have learned how to use heavy, long, thick, unbalanced DE handles... I still don’t like ‘em! 4”x1/2” and solid? Bah!! :thumbdown

75 - 85mm long, 9-10mm diameter... now you’re talking. Or try a micro SE like the Shovelhead. There is a handle.

Focusing on comfort over closeness (there's a wicked acronym here somewhere!) provides a more enjoyable shave and, paradoxically, a closer one.

My favourite handle so far is the Tech's Fat Handle: 23 g, 11.2 mm x 77.1 mm.
I don't understand the modern solid SS crowbar handles. How hard can it be to drill out the centre? Larger diameter is nice, but not at the expense of additional mass.
