What's new

What did you hone today?

2nd of the two Russian razors. This is a BIG razor that I am affectionately referring to as my Sweeney Todd razor. The bevel near the edge, and edge look immaculate under the 30x loupe, and the hanging hair test was an absolute breeze. Note the fineness of the hair used...it was so beautiful it was ridiculous. I plan to use this tomorrow.

If these two razors hold these edges through the rest of this month and December, they will be quite special indeed!

Goldilocks honing today. Planned on shaving with the Kama 23 but the edge wasn't up to snuff after stropping. Used the PAX 178 instead, but it was a bit harsh.

The Kama went to the Swaty with Tabac lather and seems much better now. Shave test tomorrow.

And the PAX went to the hybrid side of the Les Lat under water to try to smooth it out a bit.

There are some nice finishing stones available that can ramp up the sharpness while still retaining the mellow, face friendly edges cotis are famous for - some of those finishers are even budget friendly.
Could you elaborate? That's exactly what I'm looking for.

This 1st Generation Filarmonica 14 Especial has had a rough life. However, it’s still a magnificent shaver!

I dropped the edge back to the 8k, went to the 12k, and finished on the Silkvein. The Silkvein is supposed to be a pre-finisher, but the resultant edge felt very nice on my face.

I have two special razors arriving tomorrow, and I think I will finish one of them on this stone in order to see what’s what!

The beaten down, but beautiful shaver above...well his 1st GEN Big Brother arrived today (along with a JMP Imperial 14), and I finished it on the Escher Barber’s Gem. I have never seen a 1st Gen Filarmonica 14 with the horizontal line under “MONSERRAT” on the tang, but I am no expert. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s shave!

I hope that everyone has a nice Thanksgiving!

I honed my Filarmonica today and did a little "toe" repair. I haven't had this razor long. I honed it when I got it and have shaved with it several times. I have bought several razors lately (including the Filarmica) and when I got them I honed them in a hurry just by feel (without checking them with a microscope).

Today I checked all my straights (about 10) and I saw a couple that had microchips/bad metal/whatever on one area. With the Filarmonica it was near the "toe" and with another it was closer to the "heel".

The other was a quicker repair as it wasn't as bad. With the Fili it was taking too long so I went down to a coarse oilstone for the repair and then the usual waterstones for the rest.

All's good now. I'll keep checking them with the microscope for a while to see if they stay repaired or if maybe there's some bad metal causing this issue.
