What's new

What did you hone today?

Hayashi, baba swedish steel and a w59. Killed the edge on the three. Nakayama iromono that has su and goma for midrange. Hard takashima for the finish. I used each other as tomos. The takashima didn't give any away as expected. Its a hard bugger. Takashima is the larger stone. Both long time ago buys from Takeda.

Ask me about shaving naked!
Hey Bill,

Can you post a larger image of the BaBa stamps and scales please? I have a reason for asking …

Thank you sir!

What was your progression before this? Nice stone and cutthroat!!!!

Arks are not usually my go to finisher…the edge was fine starting out with only one or two shaves on it.

I just took it to a slurried JNAT, worked that with adding a spray of water every ten or so laps, until it was just water. Then I went over to the translucent ark for 100+ laps on WD-40.

Awesome. Nice work Matt.

Ok this one beat me. I simply could not put an edge on this new factory blade to save myself. The bevel in the centre and ends is completely on one side only. There is zero contact in the other side…

Not very happy with this one.

Yeah, that is rough.

Razors like that are why I keep a diamond hone. They need to be bashed into shape with brute force. They will never be pretty again, but at least they will shave.

Currently honing a TI with an even worse warp than that. I think I'm over 3,000 strokes on diamond plates and stones, and it's almost ready for a 1,000 grit stone. I've eaten into the nice Solinger logo. But I am determined to get a flat bevel and a shave.

I suppose I could have just pandered to the warp, honing on narrow stones and following all of the contours, but I did not want to do that. The razor would have annoyed me forever.

A TI with a solingen logo?

@Tomo, you need to send it back. I had a similar experience and was able to negotiate getting a new razor. Happy to share the details of my experience over a PM. What brand is the razor - I don't recognize the mark?

Honing a NOS Filarmonica Novodur for my friend David. There were only 2 synths and one finisher in the progression. The bevel was set from factory using a 4k Shapton Glass HR, lightly stropped and tested for HHT. A good razor should cut hair cleanly at 4k and why, yes it did, first image. This was followed by a Shapton Glass 8k HC - the Glass Stones are designed to go in 3x steps, so this is a quite conservative progression.

The finisher and tomo are Nakayamas, the same finisher and tomo that gave me 153 shaves on a Filarmonica 14 Sub Cero. David should be in for quite a few excellent shaves.

Fon and parker 510. As usual. Kill the edge. Nakayama iromono with atoma 1200 slurry for midrange. Super fast stone. Followed by ozuku with a nakayama maruichi tomo I cut myself. Fast progression and cuts hair like a ****. Lol.
