What's new

What did you hone today?

Small chip off the bay, back in service today.

I dropped the edge on the 13/16 Goldedge that I have been using to 8k, and attempted to finish on this Ozuku Koppa. I started with a slurry, and eventually it was diluted down to just water for the final 30 laps or so. I will likely shave test it tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Yes harder than I expected and required some elbow grease. How’s your edge holding up?
Shaveable but needs more refinement, has a raw feel to it. Looks alright under the scope but has some faint scratches on it. Needs abit (alot) more love on the hone I believe 😅

I did a few more laps with just water, stropped, and then used one of my daughters very very fine hairs to test. It passed the HHT all along the edge which I thought was impressive given how fine the hair. Now I am a bit more excited to try the edge.

Perhaps JNATs will be another fun little rabbit hole to go down?

My pal wants to try straight razor shaving so I am sending him this Genco Focus. The was the pre-finishing step before moving to the Escher Barbers Gem. This Genco took a pristine edge, and just felt wonderful on the stones. I have one other I need to sharpen and try....a Minty Gold Seal.

The initial shave with this razor off of the jasper was truly excellent!

However, I wanted to see how it feels off of the Ozuku Koppa thats 5+ in hardness. I dropped it back down to 8k, and then finished on the Ozuku with slurry eventually diluted down to just water. As with the Dubl Duck, the bevel near the edge looks great under the 30x loupe, and it passed the HHT with absolute ease.

I will shave test it tomorrow, and see what I see!

Shavesmith 8/8+ FOR BARBERS USE

This is the was my first time trying the mystery EBay JNAT out as a finisher. It looked like a real dog from the sellers pictures, and I dont

I dropped the edge back to the 8k, and then made a neon orange rust colored slurry, and gave it a shot. The bevel near the edge appears to be better than the bevel off of the jasper, and the razor more effectively passed the HHT. Note the mirror finish...the reflections are more crisp than the reflections from the jasper.

I can’t wait to shave test this edge tomorrow or Sunday...see how the weekend goes!

"HOTD 10-16-20"

Actually, from a around a week ago. The edge of the Astrale I honed back in May was starting trail off and jump; so I took it to a translucent/true-hard Ark with Norton honing oil as I had recently been posting about using an Ark with Norton honing oil. Heavy strokes at first to override any rounding as introduced by the pasted strops, followed by lighter strokes towards the finish. Three shaves in after repeated stropping with what is my favorite strop, a Delta Hardware Co. "Non Com Pare" Russian Shell, and the edge is now jim-dandy.

This is the other razor that has given me fits when honing, so I figured that I would give it a spin on this unknown Jnat. End result was the same as what I was able to do with the Shavesmith FBU. I think I will shave test it on Monday I suspect!

I do believe this rock is the real deal, and I am looking forward to finishing easy razors like a Double Duck or a Filarmonica on it!
