What's new

What DE should be next on my list?

I'm feeling the itch for a new razor. I started with a Progress LH, then various vintage Gillettes (Slim, Fat Boy, Black Beauty, Super), but I've been enjoying the following lately: R41 (2013), Fatip and Stahly (on a Weber handle). I feel like I have more control with these and can get better shaves with fewer passes although I have to be more careful depending on the blade. Is there a razor along the lines of the R41 and Fatip that offers easier blade alignment? The Stahly and vintage Gillettes definitely have better features for that. One of the Above The Tie razors maybe? Thanks!

Not exactly sure what you mean by easier blade alignment, but I think that if you like the R41 and the Fatip that a Cadet OC might also but up your alley. I enjoy the aggressiveness of the R41 and the Fatip, but find that I need to be very alert with my blade angle and pressure or else there's trouble. I get a smoother shave from a Cadet OC I would say.... by that I mean a shave with less irritation. A Cadet is relatively cheap, especially compared to the Above the Tie razors..... but I also like the Atlas R1. It's more aggressive than a Cadet OC I would say, but not as aggressive as a Fatip or R41.

I have a Cadet OC...for the price how can you pass it up?...and I tried it for several shaves just recently and hated it. It was very odd, but it seemed to make blades I liked seem dull. I got decent shaves, but it was uncomfortable. I'll have to try it again with a Feather and see what happens, but a Wilkinson and Gillette Yellow didn't work in it at all.

As far as blade alignment goes I think the traditional 3-piece design allows for the blade to possibly be loaded fairly crooked, but some razors have extra features that ensure better alignment. The Ikon OC and Stahly I have are definitely easier to load a blade straight. Not a huge deal as you just have to watch what you're doing, but I like that attention to detail.

The Atlas razors are really interesting. I see Bullgoose has some Joris on sale and those look like prettier versions of the Fatip. Hmmmm....

Give some personna labs a shot in the Cadet... just sayin. :)

I'd suggest a Gillette NEW long comb if you want vintage, or if you want a very pretty (and pricey) Fatip, go for the Joris.

I'll have to try the Personna Labs in it. That's another blade I like and it seems to work well in different razors.

I have a Gillette NEW LC which I'm getting replated and it's definitely a keeper, but I'm not totally in love with it. Maybe it just needs a longer & heavier handle and I didn't try a wide variety of blades in it. I probably should slow down as I'm accumulating too many razors too quickly to thoroughly evaluate them. I love trying all the different razors, blades, soaps, creams, etc., but it is getting a bit overwhelming.

Thanks for suggestions!

Try a parker razor. The heads are still fairly aggressive, and if you end up not liking it, their handles are excellent. If you can handle a Fatip, the parker might be a nice change. I had a 97R and loved it. Their TTO razors would be easier too.
