I ask because I mostly see all possible shades but black when looking for raw material for scales. The ones I just ordered are some kind of red. Do you achieve the jet black colour by paint?

Ebony can be shades of black, brown sometimes even lighter streaked colors.
That being said, it's not to difficult to get a very dark, almost black color (no painted needed)
Your best bet is to find a local supplier and look before you buy.
