What's new

What brush bristles do you prefer: boar, badger, synthetic or horse?

What is you favorite shave brush bristles? Is it badger, boar, synthetic or horse. I prefer synthetic. I have a Jack Black brush that really can whip up some great lather no matter what soap I use.

If you ask that question to four random B&B members, you'll probably get five or six different answers!

Did you mean 4-6 different answers for each type of bristle? lololol I use badger but today---I used a vintage Made Rite boar I have and then I ordered a Semogue 1305 from Bullgoose because I liked the way it lathered my PannaCrema. Now I'll have another brush to contemplate when it comes to the daily shave, but that's why I like this hobby--Hmmmmmmm gettin close to restore another brush........so many , such a short time.

I would not say I have a favorite bristle. It all depends on the brush and sometimes whether I'm face or bowl lathering, or even what soap I'm using.

I've not used a horse. Perhaps that disqualifies my opinion.
Between badger, boar and synthetic, I'm firmly in the badger fraternity!

The badgers I got seem too fluffy. Fine if you like it that way, but I like the Boar so far. However I'm about to embark on trying out a horse to see if that's better.

Heck fire, while I'm going for stiffer bristles I might work my way up to brass, then stainless. I have some of those out in the shop. Wonder how they lather?

I started with badger they were too floppy. Then went to boar, but they were too scritchy. Now back to badger with the proper (for me) loft, and it is the thing I am least likely to change again.

i use badger, boar and horse and love all three types. i have no desire to try synthetic in fact i loathe the thought of it. no offense meant to the synthetics users but i see them as a politically correct product.

I never heard of this one. Could you tell me more about it? Who makes it? Who sells it?

Muhle. The V2 is their latest generation of synthetic fiber they put in their knots. I have a Muhle synthetic V1 (first generation) in 19 mm. It's a great brush with soft tips and good backbone.
I like it enough to not want the V2.

I love silvertip brushes. It's sad that it took me almost two years into DE shaving to break down and buy one.

The best and only good boar brushes are made by Omega, imo.

Mixed boar and badger are very nice after the initial break in period.

Never tried horse hair.

I've never tried any of the newer synthetics. The only synthetic I used was just a cheap one and didn't like it. I've heard Muhle's synthetic silvertip is amazing though.
