What are your non-shaving related "best finds"?

This weekend, I was playing around in Springfield, and SWMBO wanted to stop into a particular thrift shop. After looking around a little bit and not seeing a whole lot that I wanted, my better half drew my attention to a stack of flooring in the corner. I picked through and found 3 new, unopened boxes of 3/4 inch thick prefinished hardwood flooring, and 2 new boxes of "engineered bamboo" flooring, all for the hefty price of $2.99 a box. $17 later, I left with my 5 boxes of wood flooring. All together, they should cover close to 100 square feet, and I'll probably work out some way to put it all together in our kitchen. This got me thinking, what are some of your favorite non-shaving related finds?

I don't have much luck finding hidden treasures at thrift stores. the only thing i've purchased that I later turned around and made money on was a $3 record I found in the used bin -- I sold it for $100 . other than that I regularly buy used hardcover books at the thriftstore, most of which probably aren't worth anything. I did score a brand new leather bound w/gold leaf National Geographic book on Egypt at Goodwill a couple months ago. I gave it to my wife's 11 yo cousin because she's going to Egypt soon.

I picked up Shaeffer Snorkel fountain pen for $15 at a flea market last month. It was unused in the original box and all the parts in perfect working order. It writes perfectly (in fact, I'm using it today).

A 1924 Colt transitional 1911 for 800.00.

Sold it a week later for 2600.00.

That's great! I was told by a certain brunette here that I can not buy any more firearms, though! I guess the few that I have will have to do.

These are all neat stuff, and awesome finds! I'll add another of mine. I picked up a Milwaukee industrial shop vac that someone placed at their curb with a "FREE" sign on it. I bought a new filter for it and have been using it ever since. They still make the same model, and it's roughly $1000 for a new one.

OK, I'll admit it, I googled Shaeffer Snorkel. :001_smile

Nice find on the hardwood flooring!

This thread is timely. I wanted to share my find at a garage sale last weekend. I got two heavy-duty metal cabinets with drawers and an overhead metal shelf for all of $10!! This weekend I got some wood at the hardware store and made it into this work bench. What do you guys think?

Years ago I got a McIntosh 275 tube power amp and C22 preamp at an estate auction warehouse for $85. The sellers thought it was some sort of Apple computer equipment. The 275 ran so hot it heated up my apartment. I sold them at a nice profit. Alas such lottery wins are rare...

I bought a vintage inspired turn table, cd, radio combo for $40 (originally $150)....now my bf and I hunt all over town for lps, it's been the best buy in a while!!

P.s. who decided that vinyl was the best way to spell that? It just looks wierd to me.

Very nice! One can never have enough workbench or enough storage under said workbench. The cabinets look to be the perfect size for woodwoorking tools of all kinds.

Many years ago I picked up a first edition The Godfather for $0.25 at a yard sale. It was printed in 1969 and it still has the original jacket. After doing some homework I found that it's a Book Club Edition and may be worth about $30. Too bad it's not a first edition first printing. I hear those are worth a few hundred dollars. No matter, it's still a cool book.

I picked up a penny in a supermarket parking lot, and it was from 1894. I also once got a dollar bill in change that looked kind of funny, and it was a 1930's silver certificate.

About 10 years ago I bought an original 1984 Macintosh computer for $1 at a surplus store. Sold it a few weeks later to a collector for $400.

Funny how little things like that stay with you forever.

Of course, the stupid crap you buy but that is now worthless, I've forgotten all about :biggrin1:

Exactly! The $20 I saved on razor while walking around a flea market for several hours is somehow more satisfying and memorable than the money I could have earned while working for a fraction of that time. It is the thrill of the hunt and finding something of value where others have missed it. Somehow I value the Shaeffer Snorkel more than the Parker 51 that I paid full price for, even though they are worth about the same.
