What are your favorite wood chips for smoking & why?

I do not use chips for smoking on my smoker. I just use oak, pecan or hickory in small chunks 4 x 6 size. But I will use chips on the grill over the top of charcoal or lump wood charcoal. I never ever soak them in water…the water tends to emit an acrid smoke Taste.
 
I like apple, cherry or chopped up Jack Daniels oak barrels. What I choose usually depends on what I’m smoking. Sometimes I use a combination of two, sometimes a mixture of all three.
