When I posted a question about these in the brushmaking forum, the response was along the lines of "there's a reason no one has posted anything about the knots..." I personally am interested as well. I have heard decent reviews on their brushes, maybe do a search on the WSP Monarch brush that has the HMW knot in it... its the exact same knot.

My favorite badger knots are: WSP Superfine two-band, Shavemac D01 three-band fan, Shavemac Silvertip bulb and WSP Finest two-band about in that order. Icing on the cake that all but the last one are available as knots alone.

I have toyed with the thought of another custom brush and it would be an Elite Razor Desert Ironwood handle with a 24/48mm WSP Superfine (not extra density).

To address the OP, I have used the WSP HMW in regular and extra density. It is certainly a luxurious brush with special hair, and I do believe the claim that it is equal to Plisson HMW. The complete brushes with this hair currently offered by WSP are lofted too high for my personal taste. If your preferences are similar, contact Rudy Vey or Bob (Elite Razor). They both do fine work and stock WSP knots for their projects. Bob currently charges $15 extra for a WSP knot over TGN which I feel is more than worth it. Don't get me wrong; a TGN knot is no slouch.

I had wanted to try one of Lee's knots in a restore I did not too long ago, but there were a few things that held me back.

The price was the first thing that jumped out at me. Very expensive.

The lack of feedback at the time was another issue. I wasn't brave enough to put my wallet on the line and be one of the early adopters.

Lastly there was the BIG issue of where the knots were sourced. There was information pointing to where Lee's knots came from and they were far, far less expensive than what he offers them for. There was a thread about it on another board that turned south real quickly.

Would I like to try one at some point? Yeah. But I'm not paying $180 for a XD SuperFine knot when I can get something VERY similar from TGN for $30, and I know how those perform and really like them.

Hell, for $180 I can have Rudy turn me a beautiful custom handle and fill it with a D01 Shavemac knot, or have Mr. Sabini make me an M&F in Blonde or Finest.

Hmm, this really makes me not want one :(

Could you post the links to the threads you mentioned? Thanks!

I remember that thread and the information.

If you ask me, I say walk away from WSP and buy something else.:thumbdown

It is not odd to me at all: Lee doesn't want his products competing with each other. He doesn't want people getting just the knot to save a buck either. He positioned it such the knots are going to be placed in very fancy artisan handles, so it adds to his brand image when they pop up in the forums.

Yeah, exactly! The same knots and the same handles that were available for 30-40 bucks from the same Chinese vendor on Alibaba who pulled them out from sale when he got caught.

Well, seems like a pretty touchy subject. I had no idea this is what I was about to start.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Better to find out about all this stuff before you purchase....this way you can make the decision knowing all the surrounding drama and whether you want to support the brand in spite of.

I choose not to, for the reasons above and more.
