What's new

Well, This Is Greedy

This Aristocrat gets bid up to $92 -- but reserve was not met, so no sale. And read the Q&A section where he explains why it is unused. I never knew that water and shaving powder were corrosive.

Oh, yeah -- this auction ended right on the heels of this one.

I have seen it where people pay more for something used than a price I can find it (with about 10 mins of Googling) new. I mean conducting a Google search is not exactly exercise, or is it?

Yeah, I sent in and asked the guy how he knew and even if I were a Philadelphia lawyer I couldn't figure out his answer. For a 60 something year old razor to be un used would have to come from a serious collector's estate or some old lost stock or something. Of course we know that Gillette sold a select number of these razors to the concession on Mars, sooooo some of them might be coming back because martians don't shave. bc

No kidding. It could have been used for a solid week and cleaned up, and no one would be the wiser. That's some false logic for you.

He does note that it originally belonged to a lady friend of his that bought it as a display piece. Not that I'm defending the seller's price, but his claim of unused does fit if that were true.

That part's fine. It's the "corrosive chemicals" bit that's screwy. I thought plating loss was due more to friction, not corrosive creams and soaps. That's why the underside of my New is as bright as C-3PO, while the cap is dull.

Concerning the "corrosive" quality of shaving powder/soap/cream, I have bought gold plated razors that were caked with soap scum that was probably at least 40-years old that took a lot of effort to get off, but underneath was bright, shiny corrosion-free gold.

I wish him luck with his reserve price. My guess is that it will be lowered if/when he tries again.

Maybe not. There is a fellow with a lot of 9 razors for $50 BIN. He hadn't sold twice and I messaged him saying I was interested in razors x,y, and z. He said because the price was so low, he didn't want to break up the set.

10 days ago or so I emailed a seller politely telling him/her that the nice razor and nice richwood box it was in was a mismatch set and he should alert potential buyers. The seller responded quickly saying someone else had passed on the same info but the seller WAS NOT going to change the listing because of bidding on it? That set sold for $91. Good ol greed.

Fleabay

I was watching that auction and I couldnt believe $92 didnt meet the reserve price. Must've been set to $100. Seems crazy, but if its mint is that ridiculous? I know that presidents regularly go for far more than that but they are rarer. Maybe someone who knows more about aristocrats could share some wisdom here? Is $56 too much for that second aristocrat? I've only ever bought one, and its a shaver grade. Just curious.

I think $56 was a pretty decent price because it looked pretty clean. $100 is too much because these are actually pretty common sets, and there always seems to be a couple of them on auction at any given time. A while back I pulled one out that looked brand new for only $30.

I bet he didn't want to sell it!
Just fishing for an idea of how much it's worth.
Put a REALLY high reserve price and watch people waste their time watching and bidding!

Interesting idea, and certainly an inexpensive way of of getting an appraisal, however, the razor has been relisted.
