Weber Polished head vs. DE89? Just the head- anyone have both?

I have an EJ DE89 head which is now mounted on an Ikon bulldog handle, virtually identical to the Weber handle. It is my favorite razor, followed closely by a Gillette NEW Long Comb on a BRW bulldog. The heavy handles really turn a good head into a power tool.

I would recommend the DE89 on a heavy handle to any shaver, but I am curious how just the two heads compare and I don't want to buy a whole Weber razor. They look similar, but of course you cannot tell what differences in gap, exposure and angle you'll get just by looking at photos of the empty razors.

Has anyone tried both heads on a Weber (or other heavy handle) and can you give me your impressions of differences in the heads?

Thanks!

Both provide nice shaves, the Weber is slightly more aggressive, if you do two passes with each, the Weber will leave you with a smoother face, IMO. If I had to choose between the two I would choose the Weber.

Here is a combo I used recently with the Weber Polished + Griest New (Krona re-plate), very nice shave!

+1 on what Erik said. i have tried both and the Weber is the better shaver, for me, because of its substantial weight.
John, if you want an even better shaver than the PH, if you can find the DLC, then you will be in for a great treat!
Good luck.

Have to factor out the substantial weight. I agree with that. But I have my DE89 on a bulldog handle, too, same weight. I'm looking for folks who have shaved with both heads on the Weber handle. Looks like Erik did. Thanks for your thoughts!

I am absolutely convinced that solid, heavy handles are the way to go with any razor.

I had my EJ on an Ikon Bulldog II recently and absolutely loved it. The extra weight was really nice! It was borrowed and has gone home now:sad:, but I'm currently looking to add a regular bulldog handle into my den. I owned a Weber DLC w/ a classic handle and really didn't enjoy the shave from it. I haven't written off the polished head though, I may end up buying one of those. I felt I got the better shave from my EJ.

I have a Weber handle that I keep with my "free range" heads. I have the DE89 and polished Weber head that I use on that same handle.

I also have a Sabi/Mariner head which, to me, is identical to the Weber head (as far as the shave goes and also what looks to be blade exposure and angle).

Out of the two (DE89 and Weber/Sabi) I prefer the Weber/Sabi head as it has more "bite" and "cut" than the DE89 though I use them both about equally.

Weber and Sabi heads are on the bottom row. DE89 is second from the right on top row (Parker head next to it on the right is also very similar to the DE89 in the way both shave)

I much prefer the Weber head to the DE89. For me it provides a more efficient, smoother shave.

I fully agree with this. There's something about that Weber head that delivers a smoother shave than the EJ. At least it does for me.

On the Weber bulldog handle, I've used the Weber (of course) and DE89 heads (and the Sabi too). My preferences are similar those above. For me, the Weber is #1, Sabi is #2, and the DE89 is dead last. I've just never gotten a great shave from the DE89, regardless of the handle used. In my experience, a weighty handle can help improve an already good razor, but you need a good base to start with.

Well, looks like the Weber is worth trying! I love the DE89 on a heavy handle. Thanks for the input, guys, I appreciate it.

I just ordered the Bulldog handle and Weber head. I already own a DE89. This thread has me really looking forward to delivery. I am in Canada all week. Hoping the razor will be waiting for me Thursday evening when I get back to Seattle.

I keep reading about webers and now i want to try one. I like my r89, love the look too, but it's my only razor and i feel like i always miss hairs with it. Are they still being sold or is this another good luck finding it on b/s/t?

So here's another question. I own a Merkur closed comb head, where would it fit in this scale and would it be worth it to purchase a razor such as a Sabi for a more aggressive shave?
