My Weber razor arrived yesterday! Well, actually a card arrived through my door to say that customs wanted some VAT and the post office wanted £8 for letting me know, but then I could have it.
The razor was nestled in its box in bubble wrap together with a card from Weber thanking me for buying it, and a pack of five Astra SP blades. I was immediately struck by the weight (100g) and the sharpness of the knurling. This thing feels like it means business! I was also pleased that I'd gone for the ARC head as I think it looks better with the silver handle. A side by side comparison with my Merkur HD reveals that the two razors look very similar, which is exactly what I wanted, essentially a three-piece HD in stainless steel. The Weber is noticeably heavier (20g) and feels more sturdy.
Happily I'd skipped shaving for a few days so there was plenty for the Weber to tackle! In the interests of changing as few things as possible, I loaded it with the twice-used med prep from my HD and lathered up with TOBS sandalwood cream. Usually with four days' growth I expect a little tugging on the first pass, but no! Only the sound let me know that the razor was doing anything, and what it was doing was mowing down stubble like a scythe. The second pass felt like the blade was missing, but was just as effective. I don't know what voodoo Weber have worked with the head, whether it's the ARC coating or the blade geometry but it was soooo comfortable! The handle provided excellent grip even with soapy hands.
I think my RAD has been killed, and my HD has been dethroned. This really is a lot of razor for the money, and hopefully the all-stainless construction will mean it'll last longer than I do.
