Was served decaf americano that I didn't order?

Was confused when I went to my local coffee drive thru and ordered decaf, but when I got to the pickup window the girl said even though I ordered a decaf, she made me a decaf americano. I was totally ignorant to the situation, and wondered why she made me something I didn't order. I had no idea what it even was, and she described it as "really fresh" decaf.

So after a bit of research, it is served as a substitute to a pot of decaf that has been sitting on the burner all day? It is basically watered down espresso?

The last decaf I got there wasn't very good at all, and I must say the decaf americano was really good-maybe it was the "really fresh" thing!

yes americano is basically just an espresso shot watered down to resemble a typical cup of coffee. I would agree that it is most likely going to be better than a decaf that has been sitting around in a pot for a few hours made with a drip maker. I think you did good!

If my history is correct, the Americano stems from the GI's in Europe during WW1 or 2 (i forget), when they would order coffee at a cafe, they would receive an espresso. So they started ordering it with hot water on the side and watering it down to make "coffee" not espresso. (this could be total bull, or some wives' tale, I've never really verified the story).

And, IMO, Americanos are awesome, so you did good. And, a fresh quality espresso shot with hot water will always taste better than the burnt stuff on a burner.

Yeah, I think they use it when they don't have any (potable) drip coffee available.

A few years ago I went to a Starbucks in Calgary (at the Montgomery Safeway) once and was told "we are all out of coffee, but I can make you an Americano"!!!:blink:
I pointed out to the "barista" that he is surrounded by bags of coffee, but he explained that those are only for sale per bag and that they had run out of all the coffee that they use to make their per cup coffee
:a13::a47:

Having never liked Starbucks in the first place, it was easy for me to never go into another one of their stores.

Exactly.

Yes. They were treating you well IMO, brewing you a cup of fresh coffee on the spot.

This looks like a job for Springs1.
:lol: Yeah she would say that the coffee house was doing themselves a favor...that they should have either made pot of freshly brewed coffee, or a single cup pourover, or closed up shop for the day if they could not fulfill such basic order.

Please don't judge the Calgarians too harshly, they are a special bunch when it comes to coffee. (I obviously joke, I have two sisters that live in Calgary and love to make fun of their town.)
