Want to get a Super Speed - But which one?

Hi All,

I am new to the forum, I have just started out with a Merkur HD and have already got my eye out for a second DE. I am considering a 1964 Super Speed, can anyone point me to a resource to help me identify the different types so I can make an informed purchase?

Many Thanks

There is some info on Super Speeds here:

You should also check out the reviews - there really is a lot of helpful information there.

My first DE was a 1948-1950 style Super Speed and it was a great razor to learn on and consistently gives a great shave. They are popular, abundant, and are priced reasonably. If I had to choose my first SS over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

Good luck.

I have the '48-'50 and the '57 Flare Tip - they are both great. I also have a Red Tip which is also a very nice razor, different animal though.

I'm not entirely sure it matters where you start, all of the Superspeeds should be quite reasonable and once you get started, you'll want to try them all anyway.

Welcome!

I like the late 40's superspeeds (notably the first SS - '47, I think - but that's the one that costs most) - but for a great shave and cool looks - I think the black handled flare tip can't be beat.

Have fun!

Incidenally, you'll soon want one of each. (We know this.)

I never used a Super Speed I didn't like. I like the shave from the 1947 the best followed by my 1960 and then anything in the '50's. The '48 to '50 models are also great but for me a little on the mild side. And to quote bythbook, "...you'll soon want one of each..."
