Vodka

So what is your favorite potato based vodka. I know, I like grey goose and belvedere too, but they are wheat based. So which is your fav potato based? Me, I like svedka quite a lot. Best value if you ask me. Great in a dirty martini or a bloody mary. What do you think????

I think Svedka is a great bargain vodka. I like Stoli and Ketel, but since I hardly ever drink them straight, it doesn't make all that much of a difference, at least as compared to other spirits.

Frankly, I wouldn't be able to differentiate ANY vodka in a a drink with such strong flavors as a vodka-olive brine cocktail, or a bloody mary. I prefer Stolichnaya as my go-to vodka, beacause the price point is right, and I don't have a discerning enough palate to tell much difference.

Interesting Mythbusters episode in 2006 about Vodka.

An independent expert and Jamie (the red-bearded Mythbuster guy) were able to rank vodkas by quality, both identifying the top-shelf vodka. The expert was able to rank all six (I think) samples perfectly. Kari (the lady of the bunch) had pretty much a random ranking, actually picking the lowest-quality sample as her favorite.

I love Chopin and used to buy it on a regular basis, but then I came across the comparisons done and how there's such little difference between most mid-level and "premium" vodkas.

Curiosity killed my cat, so I decided to do my own comparison: one bottom-shelf (McCormick); one middle-shelf (Stoli) and one top-shelf (Chopin).

McCormick on it's own is not really all that bad, but the fairly negligible difference between the Stoli and Chopin surprised me. Sure, the Chopin is a bit smoother and "tastes" a little better than the Stoli, but I no longer see the need to spend big bucks on a nice bottle and marketing.

Stoli is my go-to now. I'm sipping on a chilled four-shot as I write this post.

YMMV.

I did a double blind taste test with my friends on several different vodkas, the result of which is me buying whatever the cheapest vodka is, because there was no difference between a $17 bottle and a $50 bottle for all intents and purposes.

Blind, my personal favorite was Skyy followed by Russian Prince in a plastic bottle.

Granted the liquor commission around here doesn't bring in Popov or other basement shelf vodkas...

If you're gonna mix it with anything other than the temperature from your freezer you're wasting money buying "premium" vodka, and even then, middle shelf should do ya fine.

I agree that with a bloody mary you could not differentiate a vodka, but I disagree with a "vodka-olive brine cocktail" or what I call a dirty martini, I can definitely tell the difference b/w a mid level and top shelf vodka. I tried Sobieski tonight and liked it pretty good, by itself, in a dirty martini and with RC cola (remember that). Keep the chat up, I really like getting opinions on diff vodkas...

Skyy is a grain based vodka, not a potato one...

A buddy of mine made similar comments about the lower priced vodka being comparable and he specifically mentioned Smirnoff. Now I've only tried a few different brands prior to this (Grey Goose, Absolute, and True North) but when I opened the bottle of Smirnoff, I nearly died from asphyxiation. The gasoline-like fumes deafend my sense of smell completly. I choked-down a swallow and it ... almost urged a regurgitation. NEVER AGAIN!!! :nono:

Of the other three, the absolute has grown on me a bit, I really like True North and it's a bit cheaper than the Grey Goose... which is smoother, but the flavor isn't quite as dynamic... it's a bit of a toss-up, but I'll generally stick with the local brand. Give it a try if you get the chance. Not that this has anything to do with the O.P. intended discussion regarding potatoe vodka's specifically... sorry about that.

I will drink Svedla strait it is so good. It is what I use to clean my pipes too. I also like Bong vodka. It is 40-50USD for a 750. It is the smoothest vodka I have ever tasted. Well worth it if you drink it srtait, but still hard to justify with the price and quality of Svedka

I have been enjoying a bottle of Crystal Head vodka

Me too!

I've actually gone through mine and will probably get another cheaper vodka to refill the skull, but my wife and I actually enjoyed this stuff a lot.

Sadly, my cousin interviewed Dan Akroyd about it just 2 days before I found out about it - and I missed a chance to get some autographed bottles.

Vodka is a neutral spirit, so you really shouldn't be getting any flavor. The difference is in how smooth the vodka may be, which is directly related to how conservative the distillery is in making cuts during production. Keeping too much of the higher and lower alcohols leads to a rougher product no matter how well marketed the name, or how fancy the bottle. They pretty much all remove the phenols, esters, congeners and organic acids through filtering which helps too.

I usually buy Stoli. Cheap, reasonably authentic, not without it's character.

Tim is a huge fan of the Three Olives flavor infusions... especially Bubblegum and Rootbeer. :thumbup1:

Personal favorite is Glacier and it is made a few miles from my house. Also enjoy 44north. IF you looking for something a bit different try Dry Fly Wheat Vodka.

I have been working on a bottle of Tito's Handmade Vodka. This is a grain based vodka, not potato, at a good price point that I am really enjoying thus far.
