What's new

Vintage Williams

I finally used this very old Williams puck. If anyone knows about what year it's from I'd love to know.

In the pic with #35, it should say where it was made. It's my understanding this helps determine the factory and therefore manufacturing date.

I would venture to say between 1960 (Cranford, NJ) and 1977 (pre UPC code).

Here is a thread with some great information.

Ohh yeah, that's a vintage williams.

I've been shaving with mostly frankensoaps for a year+ now... broke out my old Vintage Williams stick for a photo op earlier this week, so had my last few shaves with it... man I forgot how rich that lather is.

What are your thoughts? And what do you usually shave with?

I've shaved with Modern Williams at least 99% of the time for the last year because I wanted to figure it out and see what the hype was about. After I did figure it out it only takes me a 10-20 second mug lather, then a 10 second face lather to get great results. (With an Omega boar brush dripping with water)

I've only used the Vintage one time so far so I'm by no means an expert. The first thing that comes to mind comparison wise is Tabac.

I would pay double the price for a Williams soap original (vintage) formula of modern production. A $2 American soap found in every grocery, at any time, would be appealing to me.
Am I the only one?

Hey Mr. Arko guy, can I have your autograph?!

And why aren’t you using ARKO?!

All kidding aside, that lather looks like utter perfection, Vintage Williams FTW!
Perfection huh? That's high praise (for the soap) considering how little effort I put into it on its first run. Thank you.

I think Williams would sell well between $3 and $5 with the old formula. That said I do really like the new formula too. I should have taken a new vs old pic and did a side by side.

I'd recommend it and Speick stick if Williams was selling the vintage formula for $5 a puck. Literally every other soap I'd say "Only if you love the scent".

After all the heat heaped on Williams over the years, frankly I'm surprised anyone wants it. I used Williams since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Always liked it. When we really got into shaving, I still used it, but recognized there were better soaps out there. That said, I have pucks of vintage, and of later vintage, and they still get used from time to time.. A fresh, clean soap... no derision here!

I do like Modern Williams and think it works well once you realize that you need to use a large boar brush that is dripping wet and a mug lather to get results.

That said, since the majority of people don't seem to like the modern version and did like the old formula I have no idea why they wouldn't go back to it.
