Vintage razor revamping and replating

I recently purchased a 1948 Gillette super speed in good condition but I want to completely restore it. I heard razor emporium is good at this but I recently read some bad old reviews about their service. Has anyone used them? Are there any other suggestions? Thanks

I have never used Razor Emporium. I do know that the best replater, hands down, is Chris Evatt of razoplate.com. He is well loved here because he always, always produces superior results.

How long have you had the razor?

To be fair it, sounds like Razor Emporium has been working on some of there issues but.......Chris is your guy. Great prices and no one will do a better job!! He is a great guy to top it all off.

I haven't used Chris, but I'm sure he does a great job from all the reviews I've read. Regarding Razor Emporium, those reviews are old, the business was new then and expanding fast, and the owner even posted a video online to apologize and to show how those issues have been resolved, which I thought was a pretty stand up thing to do. In the past couple of years, I've purchased four or five revamped razors from RE as well as had two or three more revamped by them, and they've all been excellent.

One other thing to consider, if you're into non-traditional platings, is Delta Echo Razor Works. Jay does some very cool stuff, and he's happy to work with you if you have a preference.

Agreed that RE should not be considered a bad choice solely from long ago issues they may have had. As noted startups that get popular too fast for the workforce will have hiccups. Also I have noticed that their prices are for the most part not outrageous considering what can happen in the "bay frenzy" when someone wants a particular one so bad common sense goes out the window. It's obvious that they want to continue in business and are serious about customer satisfaction. If they were not they would be out of business by now for sure.

Chris at Razorplate.com did this for me. $Razorporn11.JPG

Chris @ Razorplate did a decent job on my birth year slim adjustables. Really nice guy too. Give him a go.

In fairness, Razor Emporium did some plating for me last year as well and I can't complain either.

I like Chris personally though, he is totally switched-on customer service wise and just an all round nice guy. He gave me a full report of the condition of the razors as well and what he did to get them looking great. Gives you that personalised service feel which I like.

Razor Emporium did a nice replate on my father's (now my own) Slim in Jan/Feb last year. They also did some stuff with my brother's Fatboy; haven't heard any complaints from him, so I assume all was good.

If you're shopping around, you might consider Hibco also. I don't have any experience with them, but I have heard good things. Google "hibco replate."

I have had two re-plates by Razor Emporium and both came out great. First one Almost 3 years ago and ready in less than two weeks and other one 1.5 years ago. I have another razor I want done and contacted Chris over a year ago but have been on wait list ever since. Totally understand as this is a hobby for Chris and he is in demand but you may want to take this into consideration. Now to be fair Chris did say I am getting close to coming up on the wait list and I can send in my razor but I would rather hold onto my Toggle until my number comes up. Maybe going back to Razor Emporium if number doesn't come up by April.

OK, both razors came in and look great. The New has some minor blemishes on the bottom but the original had some corrosion there so I suspect that's the cause.

Otherwise, I couldn't be happier with the work and I'm glad to have them home. They are the two razors that my mother left after her death which kicked off this addiction for me. They deserved a good replate and care.

I'm attaching before and after pics here. Sorry for them being a touch dark. It's late evening so my lighting isn't as good. On the New, I had the cap and body done in rose gold and the comb and neck done in 24kt gold.
