Vintage Coticule and free slurry?

I bought this "vintage" Coticule to test/play with on Flebay, but it was certainly not flat - not even close:

Back in 2011 I purchased a new DMT Lapping Plate:

So after rubbing an old chisel on the DMT for a while to knockout any loose diamonds (sort of breaking-in the stone), I proceeded to lap the coticule. I am using this old baby tray to capture the water/soap/slurry:

After a few minutes:

More soapy water and more work - almost there:

All done. That lapping plate is FAST!:

There is still some very good, useful life left in it (approx. 5/8" or 7mm):

And then I carefully "collected" the water/soap/slurry, stirring the whole thing constantly to keep the slurry in suspension (it settles down fairly quickly as expected):

So now I have an useful stone to play with, and quite a bit of slurry to play with/experiment as well.

I seen that auction; Glad you got it. Looks nice now that its flat.

You going to slurry up a strop or some other experiment? Sounds fun....seriously

I would add a drop of chlorine or something to prevent the water from going bad.

No need for a slurry stone eh?

I was wondering if even a minute amount of DMT would be in the slurry. I just did this today with a CNAT and a diamond oscillating tool and stone fines I tossed for fear of compromise.

Great pics. Glad to see everything worked out for ya. I've never had a 'rogue' particle from a DMT show up when I use them to make slurry but also haven't used them to that extent in one go. If you hear any funny noises when using it, wash off the hone and start over with new slurry.

I don't know yet - I got a LOT of slurry, so I should have lots of fun experimenting.

Would a little bit of Barbicide do the same thing?

Thanks - that is a good/valid point. Even after my break-in and cleanup of the lapping stone, that there might be some loose DMT particles in there. I need to be watchful and feel/hear if something does not sound right.

That is a good way to tell - I will keep a watchful eye for anything that feels weird.

Not sure about the barbacide. I don't even know if it is needed, but I would envision it getting stinky.

I added a cap full of bleach just in case, and I dropped a small nickel-plated magnet in the bottle as well (just in case there are small metal particles around!).

I would make double sure that the magnet won't rust. Maybe coat it in fingernail polish or CA glue, 2 or 3 coats of it. Or, you could just glue the magnet to the bottom of the container (on the outside). It would be ironic to have all that slurry tainted by one of the measures that was meant to protect it.

Agreed, which is why I said these were nickel-plated magnets - I have used them for several years for several projects, no rust yet:

Neodymium magnets are a composition of mostly Neodymium, Iron and Boron. If left exposed to the elements, the iron in the magnet will rust. To protect the magnet from corrosion and to strengthen the brittle magnet material, it is usually preferable for the magnet to be coated. There are a variety of options for coatings, but nickel is the most common and usually preferred. Our nickel plated magnets are actually triple plated with layers of nickel, copper, and nickel again. This triple coating makes our magnets much more durable than the more common single nickel plated magnets. Some other options for coating are zinc, tin, copper, epoxy, silver and gold. Our gold plated magnets are actually quadruple plated with nickel, copper, nickel and a top coating of gold.

A capful might be too much maybe, I was thinking just a drop or 2. Too much might accelerate rusting. Sorry on not being very clear on that. After all the slurry settles could you pour off some of the water to dilute the bleach out?

great, that's one of the joys of coticules, they can just rebirth!!

thanks for posting!

I just bought the same stone , size , look , no patern absolutely the same . I is glued to a black sytone that produce black - green slurry . Very fine coty , but not so hard .

Looks like these two. they're good stones, but not coticules.
