Vintage Brooks Brothers Shave Soap

Gents,

I don’t know much about Brooks Brothers shaving soap or the matching shave mug, except that they are pretty neat, very old, made in England, and the soap performed exactly as a top tier vintage tallow based shave soap should perform.

There was no ingredient list, and the soap was so well wrapped in tin foil that it still has fragrance. It smells like a bar of Dawn bath soap, except with a bit more lemon scent. It is in the same genre as the original Old Spice and Gillette Sun Up.

Does anyone else have any information?

Thanks!

Nice find!

You had me at a full stop with the scent of a "bar of Dawn bath soap" ... huh?

Thanks Gents! I was actually browsing eBay again today, and I found this! I can’t wait to see if it matches the performance of the soap above!

Gents,

I changed my lathering technique slightly for today’s shave, and I could not be happier with how it turned out. This is one of the BEST shave soaps I have used lather and performance wise! The fragrance...good...old school...but it isn’t Creed Aventus or anything close!

When I worked in NYC in the 1960s I shopped at Brooks Brothers. They had quality products and did have a shaving section. However, I don't recall that mug and soap. However, I did purchase some of their aftershave products.

This was discussed previously.

Ted,

The first time I bloomed the puck in the mug with room temperature distilled water while I showered. Today, while in the shower I bloomed it with VERY hot distilled water.

I loaded the brush on the puck both times, and then I took it to my lather bowl. During the first time to add water I dipped the brush tips in the bloom water. This time I added bloom water using a syringe 1ml at a time as needed.

I was happy both times with the lather, but I was much happier with the results the second time.

Crazy lather! Gotta love some good ol' Vintage soaps. Have several in the den but my favorite is a lesser known soap called "Royal London" that makes some incredible lather. The performance of some of these Vintage soaps is excellent and surprisingly better than many soaps made today, unfortunately sometimes the scent gets lost with time.
