Vintage bakelite razor

I am interested in picking up a vintage bakelite razor. What are my options? Whats the general consensus on these?

There are many different kinds of vintage Bakelite razors.

I happen to very much enjoy my open comb slant Bakelite razor made by a German company called Fasan in the 1930's.

Is that the one marketed as a WWII German razor? I bought one of those recently and like it but don't know anything about its manufacturer.

For what it's worth, it shaves great but it's difficult to get over how light it is. Feels like a toy.

The Fasan is different. I do have one of those "WW2" razors and I haven't used it yet, but I can tell you the blade slant is different between the two.

I talked more about my Fasan in this thread:

There seem to be plenty to choose from. My favorite shaver so far is a Neillite 400. One side is really aggressive, the other is mild.
I also have a couple of old Bakelite razors that shave like a Tech, but I don't know the name. There's no info on the razor anywhere. It is kind of an open/closed comb, like a Gem 1912 SE.

Then there's the Bakelite Star razor. Haven't tried mine yet, I hear it shaves like a tech.

I also have one of the supposed WW2 unissued Wehrmacht open comb slants. Haven't tried it yet. Can't wait to, now that I've heard several good reviews.

I cant seem to find much on the Neilite 400, although I am interested. Where do you find the WW2 bakelite open comb slant razors?

I found mine on Ebay. There is/was a seller selling them. I think he goes by the name sieg_1940.

Here's a link to it. It's a buy-it-now only.

It says that 8 are available. They really do appear to be unissued. Mine appears to be brand new.
Great way to start collecting old Bakelite razors. I like the Bakelite razors a lot, for some reason. The ones I've tried have all been very good shavers. I highly recommend getting one to start your collection.

The aggressive side of the Neillite 400 is about as aggressive as a slant. The mild side is about like a Tech. That's why I like it so much.

When you specify Bakelite, do you mean that specific plastic, or any plastic from the Bakelite era?

I've got a WWII British plastic razor. German ones from that war seem pretty common; no offense, but I wouldn't have one in my house.:001_smile Anyway, I haven't used it yet, but it looks a lot like the pictures of the modern Merkur "Bakelite", only it's all brown.

Sorry, I do mean any plastic razor from the bakelite era. Thanks for the link to that WWII era german open comb slant razor. Where do you purchase a Neilite 400? There dont seem to be many bakelite/plastic razors on ebay.

Yes, I mean Bakelite, the phenolic plastic. I have 2 brown ones that are a 3 piece. The handle looks similar to a Star or Tech plastic handle. The top plate has a hump in the middle.

No offense taken. If you're a Jew, you would understandably NOT want anything from Nazi Germany in your collection.
I'm not a collector of Nazi militaria. However, German razors and cutlery are some of the best in the world, regardless of whether it was made during the Nazi era or not.
I bought it because it's an old Bakelite razor, (an open comb slant, no less), and for no other reason. I like Bakelite razors. I don't know why. have 5 old Bakelite razors so far, and hope to get more.

I found a few Bakelite razors on the bay. Not as many as I see on there sometimes. I bought most of mine from Country Joe.

There's a cool turquoise one and a white one up for bid on the bay. I'm going to wait and see how it goes on those. There's a starting bid of $9.99 but no one's bid yet.

I have a white razor exactly like the white & turquoise razors you mention as being up on the bay. It shaves pretty well, not too differently from the Merkur "bakelite." The head looks like a Merkur Progress-style head, but the build quality is not quite as high.

There are bakelite razor sets made by the "Wardonia" English razor company.

Yes there are, though you will have trouble finding sharp blades for them. The studs on the wardonia are closer together. They take the 'barrel hole' blades, which I believe will also fit on regular DE's, just not the other way around.
There were some copycats of the wardonia design which took regular blades.

I recently bought one of these razors that Jaymo has but haven't used it yet.

As an aside, some of those "WW2 German razors" may not be military issue, although this one looks like it might have been. Sometimes you'll see one advertised as such and on the box it has the DRP/DRGM trademark numbers.

DRP numbers were first issued in 1877 and continue to this day. The DRGM numbers started in 1891 and ended in 1945. From what I read online, the DRGM was a "poor man's patent" as the article itself was not examined and the DRGM classification gave it only six years' protection.

So anytime you see a DRGM number, it only dates the item to 1945 at the latest. It could have been produced year or even decades before the war, or it could have been produced during the war for the civilian population.
