Vietnamese Coffee a Winner

A Vietnamese business acquaintance recently served me a coffee she prefers with her "French coffee," as she put it. The label is Nguyen (pronounced Wynn), and it's available only at Asian markets. I like my coffee strong, memorable, yet with the softness of a velvet fist and this stuff has it in spades. If you're into authentic French coffee as any French colonial administrator or Vietnamese mandarin would have drunk it, try it with sweetened condensed milk. By itself, pressed, it's dark, rich, choclaty and sublime.

I love Vietnamese coffee after a nice bowl of Pho. Some Vietnamese restaurants make better coffee than others, but my favorites are the ones where they bring out the little metal pot and cream-filled coffee cup to the table, along with a glass full of ice cubes, and let you mix and pour it yourself.

Ironlically, the one place in this area that serves the best bowl of Pho also serves the worst coffee ... they bring it out to table ready-made in a styrofoam cup, and it just doesn't taste the way it should. Even so, its still a good way to finish off a meal.

I love Pho and French coffee after, with the sweetened condensed milk of course. The French coffee in a Styrofoam cup sounds horrendous.

There are few meals more satisfying than a tasty bowl of Pho followed with the iced Vietnamese coffee.

Ca Fe Sura Da (pronounced as best I can imitate it - kahfay soor duh with that soor syllable rising toward the end).

Most of the local joints with the best food use Cafe Du Monde with chicory to make them. The upscale places (I'm looking at you Kim Son) use other stuff. I really like it better with the chicory.

I had a truly wonderful cup at a new Pho place I discovered yesterday ... they served the coffee the proper way, bringing the drip-pot to the table and allowing me to make it myself and pour it over the ice.

The soup itself was really, really good, too ... except for the fact they scrimped a little bit on the meat and vegetables. I expect this to improve over time, once they get to know me and realize I'm a generous tipper. Most of the Vietnamese restaurants I go to serve me better and better bowls every time I go in, and the solid ingredients improve with both quality and quantity.

I found this interesting article about Vietnamese coffee ...

YES, I loved iced Vietnamese coffee. I frequent a local restaurant and make sure to get it every time. It's like a dessert.
