Vie-Long - Fiesta of the Spanish Horse

I have recently discovered the Vie-Long horse hair brushes - beautiful handles and quality knots, soft tips and decent backbones. SBAD thrives!

Would love a shorter loft Vie Long.

You can specify any loft you desire, within reason, if you purchase from Gifts and Care. You make your selection and then specify in the comments section. Juan has the best selection of Vie-Long brushes I've seen - and excellent service.

I've got the one at the back on the left. I reach for it as often as my SOC boar and thoroughly enjoy using it.

I did not know that. I was thinking something 50 or under for face lathering

These are so cool! How do the horse hair brushes compare with my fave Semogue boar?

I have both Semogue boars and Vie-Long horse hair and love them both. They are different, though. The Semogues feel softer on my face than the Vie-Longs. The horse seems to aerate my lather differently than the boar, with the boar lather being glue-like, and the horse lather being whipped cream like.
If I am not mistaken, horsehair was the dominant hair type for shaving brushes up until the 1930's. Then there was a health concern regarding their use (possibly, anthrax?), and then badger became the dominant brush hair.
Like everything regarding wet-shaving, until you try one, these are just words on a screen.

Agreed. There are a few things in wet shaving that are just so good, the only thing one can do is try them. Explaining them won't suffice. The two horsehair brushes I bought from Phil are examples of that. They're the BGS 2012 LE's in Beehive. I have the undyed and dyed in butterscotch and Ivory, respectively. Each time I use them I try and figure out why I like them so much and cannot put my finger on the point or find words to explain it. The brush is soft, but not as soft as the badger tips. The density is good, but I own at least a dozen other brushes with more density. They work great on soaps, but so do the rest of my brushes. Aesthetically, the handle's top tier, but the knots are not intrinsically attractive the way a badger's is...especially after they're wet.

So what is it? I don't know, but if you want to, then just give 'em a try.

the answer is "fun" !! These things are a pleasure to use, they are made to high quality standards, priced fairly ,and work well with creams, soaps and croaps...a big plus is the willingness of Vie-Long to actually consider, and then act upon the needs of it's customer base ! pretty rare nowadays...

Between Vie-Long, Myrsol, and UFO, I am developing a new passion for all things Spanish!

I have two horse brushes and like them as well as the Higher End (MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE) Badger Brushes. The horse is real whippy like a horse tail...how ironic. When I face lather with one I just get the tips wet. The rest of the brush moistens with the soap and creates a great feeling brush on my face.
