VDH inquiries

I've been looking around at the different VDH soaps available. (1) Firstly I'd like to know what the major differences are between the "select" and the "deluxe." Is the deluxe just more moisturizing? I like the scent of the select better, but if it isn't as good I'll steer clear.
(2) Next I found on the VDH website a pretty cool looking soap. It's a VDH "shower + shave" soap. It looks like one side is an aloe, avocado, and cucumber glycerin shave soap and the other is a shea butter soap for washing your face after the shave. They have a women's too with Chamomile, and Calendula, which also sounds pretty nice to me... Anyone tried it, or have any thoughts?

I have only used the Select once and it was similar to the Delux. I have not used the Shower + Shave soap, but I would definitely like to try it.

I have used both the Select, and Deluxe. I didn't notice any real difference between the Select, and Deluxe. However, the general consensus seems to be that the Deluxe is the superior product.

There is also a transparent Glycerin variation by the way.

Some have said the Deluxe is accomplished by combining equal parts Glycerin, and Select.

VDH is easily melted in the microwave, or on a candle warmer. It is often melted, so that it can take the shape of the container being used to store it. While in the melted state, it is easy to add some cologne/ aftershave to re-scent it.

Many of us add some Old Spice Aftershave to it when in the melted state, and the resulting soap is called VanDerSpice. :tongue_sm

Haven't shaved with it yet, but I picked up a puck of the glycerin version and it has a pretty strong aroma of it's own. I melted it down in the m-wave and added a goodly portion of cologne, but it still has it's original scent as the top note. It's not a bad scent, but not what I was hoping for.

Perhaps the cologne will make itself known when I use it (fingers crossed)

Well, I'm really interested in these shower/shave bars. I don't like amber, which is what I think the other VDH glycerin soap is, so chamomile or avacado/cucumber both sound like good choices.

According to the manufacturer, the Select is for men with "regular beards" and the Deluxe is for men with "heavier beards."

I find the Deluxe to be noticeably superior to the Select for my face.

I've never tried the glycerin.

I also saw the mixed bar on line. I've never tried it, but somebody on the forum said they use it as their shower soap and that it's quite nice. If you give it a try, let us know what you think of it. Better yet, post a review.:thumbup1:

On somewhat of a tangent, I have heard a few members say they have used some soaps they don't like as body soaps. They should work the same really, they would just lather differently, and you may end up getting more compliments about your manly new smell.

I guess I should.....

I have the mixed bar, the green one. It is pretty good, and I use it in the shower. I have never tried it for shaving, but then I bought it for shower use. I have used 1 bar nearly every day for the last month, and I still have a decent amount left. I would say it lasts longer than the typical bottle of bodywash.

I've never used the combined soaps. I have used all three of their shave soaps. They shave soaps have the same scent as Grey Flannel.

To answer your first question, based on my experience: The Deluxe is more moisturizing and has a thicker lather (as if someone mixed the Select with the Glycerin). The Glycerin is much like Col. Conk soap but with a different scnet. I personally find the VDH Glycerin to be slicker than the Col. Conk Lime (which I use on a regular basis).

Where did you get the green combo bar? I haven't seen it in stores or on-line.

Amazon has it, 3 pack for $12. Sure it can be found elsewhere

deluxe versus select: I think its that deluxe has aloe and shea butter.

+1. Aloe and Shea Butter is the difference. The "Select" is then called hypo-allergenic because it has fewer POTENTIAL allergens, but the "Deluxe" is THEORETICALLY more moisturizing and richer for it, which is why it is recommended for dry skin or heavy beards.

I never saw the Combo bar for sale before, it's intriguing but then I'm fiercely loyal to my existing bath soap so I'll probably skip it.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think that I'd like to try both the green and the pink when amazon gets them in. I wash my face with a Glycerin soap everyday in the shower anyway as a shave prep, so I think that the combo bar could be nice

I wonder if you could just melt one of those and make a big puck of one consistency, kind of like melting a VDH Glycerin and Select together...
