Van Der Hagen soap differences

S

slather

There seem to be (at least) 3 types of VDH soaps available:

- Deluxe
- Glycerin
- Select

Any comments on the differences and the performance of the three?

I've used Deluxe and glycerin. They are OK, very cheap, and readily available locally. I think the glycerin is good to make superlathers. The scent is clean and very muted so it would work well with anything. Being glycerin it is slick. The deluxe has a very mild clean and soapy scent. Nothing fancy at all. It has shea butter so it produces a decent lather and some cushion.

I have used both the Select, and the Deluxe. I didn't notice any difference between them. The deluxe is probably the most widely available, being sold in every Wal-Mart, and Walgreens.

The Deluxe is a wonderful soap that lathers really well, and just happens to cost very little. :tongue_sm

It bears noting that all three varieties are glycerin based. They just have different things added to the package. I've only tried the Deluxe and it works very well for me.

Thanks for the old thread, lots of info there.

I'm not a chemist, but the main ingredient in all three is propylene glycol, which is a glycerin-like substance. The "glycerin" soap has extra glycerine, the "deluxe" soap has aloe vera gel and some shea butter. Other than that, the soaps are the same.

I started using the Deluxe last month it works great. The Bottom line key to shaving is how you prep your face.

I noticed that too, but honestly I don't what that does for the soap other than act as a moisturizer like glycerin does. I don't know enough about soap chemistry to tell you how it would affect the soap compared to something that uses glycerin.

Well, for a non-chemist, you're doing fine ;-). Those three soaps have indeed the same, glycerin-type base, with more and better fragrances and 'stardust' added to the more expensive types...

+1 on the VDH Deluxe -

Bought on vacation for about 1.60 at Wally world, along with the 5.00 VDH boar brush. Nice clean scent, works nicely with the inexpensive Boar brush.

I get very nice shaves with the combo - with my GEMs, Goodfella and LUX.

SE Blades - PAL Blue or Ted Pella
DE Blades - Red IP or Gillette Yellow.

Just sayin'.

gone down south

I stand corrected.

But Deluxe is still meltable and pourable, so I'm going to try that [make a shave stick of it] next time a deodorant dispenser becomes available.

Learn from my pain - you need to put some kind of liner on the inside of the deodorant dispenser, at least on the bottom. Having boiling hot liquid shave soap pour out the ventilation holes all over you hand isn't fun!

Never used the Select, however Deluxe > Gylerin as far as lathering goes.

The Deluxe actually offers cushion, less slick however but works great.

Note taken!

Um, some...kind...of...liner....
