Valueing Gillette Single rings

Just wondering what you Gillette aficionados think about single rings and how you subjectively and monetarily value them. Early vs. late etc. Listings have been interesting lately from singles, sets, and even some traveler sets but prices are just everywhere and I wonder what you guys think if you pay any attention. Some recent completed listings:

Late model but nice and complete aside from the shipper and still at the 100 year mark. Seems like a decent grab for a mid year single, love the little price tag.

This one is not a 1905, another in a string of false information lately and I think the higher price reflects the error. Red felt is always eye catching

high for an uncased single

Authentic early single plus a bonus razor.

I can personally vouch for #4 as I'm the proud most recent owner.
1905 and cleaned up very nice with only some minor brassing on the cap and the bonus Old Type needed only a good cleaning and a bit of marine epoxy to set to rights a loose handle top.
I figure the OT is worth an easy 10 so the SR only set me back 65.

What they look like now.

Prices in general do seem to have taken a bit of a leap lately, particularly for the older models. There's usually a bit of a bump around now between income tax refunds and Father's Day, though, so maybe things will calm down again soon. I sure hope it's not a new "normal."

That first set looks suspicious to me. 1911 seems way too early for the "Made in U.S.A." above the logo, and I don't think the cardboard blade cases showed up either until more like 1914 when the new models came out. I've seen other "mix-and-match" stuff from that particular seller, so I wouldn't be that surprised to find the razor had been swapped into a later set's case. I probably still wouldn't have gone that high even if everything did look proper, though.

Interesting, Any idea when they stopped putting the instruction books in?

The instructions changed over the years, but as far as I know they never stopped including them.

Im confused on these as well on the second set it stamped pat pending 04 so what exactly makes this one the wrong year? As farms the others go very nice.

It's not "pat pending 04"; it's "PAT. NOV. 15, 04" which is the date of the patent, not when the razor was made. The 1905 date that the seller mentioned seems to have come from the patent date on the one blade that was with the set, also not the date the razor (or blade) was made.

You always have the right answers :closedeye so how do you determine the date on this razor by the? So what year is it? Your knowledge is amazing thanks sorry just took another look at the listing what is the date on the box? Sorry using ipad here your saying correct set but seller put wrong year right?

Porter is the Man for sure

The diamond arrow was not created until 1908 so that immedately dis-credits any 1905 claims. The serial number brings it to 1916

I'm trying to pick up most of the early razors like single rings before I start going after flair tips, techs etc. I also try to find the ones in different cases before I get the more standard ones as well. I really like my Pioneer Olympic set I just picked up, and the red colored single ring set towards the back as well. Probably my best single ring at this moment is the cased combination set complete with shipper, price, instructions and matching serial number.
