What's new

Validated a great truth today (a.k.a How i learned that canned goo ain't the devil)

I've known since I started (but didn't want to admit it) my DE journey 8 months ago that canned goo wasn't entirely to blame for all the bad shaves in my life. Technique, prep, and a fresh blade is more than half the battle. So this morning, I decided to test my theory. I've had a yellow can of Barbasol for a while, but been too afraid to use it, having flashbacks to irritated, bloody shaves. I conquered my fears, prepped with a hot shower, some Musgo glyce soap and then hand-applied some Barbasol and went to work with a SS loaded with a fresh Red IP. 2 passes and my usual AS routine later, I found I had no irritation, nicks, weepers, just a nice DFS. It felt great to know that my prep and technique are now so good that I can use canned goo and not hurt myself. But I don't feel that I will, all the soaps and creams I've accumulated since I joined B&B are much more fun. Thanks for reading, just wanted to share!

I don't think canned goo is the devil. I just think that there are so many soaps and creams that are better.
I choose to use the better stuff.

Barbasol is not bad at all, but since collecting my brushes and soaps, I think I'd feel guilty using it!

What's a shame is that 20 years ago Pinaud made a Clubman scented shave cream in the can. It was to Barbasol what Martin de Candre is to Williams. It was phenomenal canned goo.

I often wonder why they quit making that when they still make the Clubman AS and the hair gel.

+1 here. The canned stuff isn't all that bad, and in a pinch will more than get the job done. As you mentioned prep is the important thing if using the canned stuff. Its just that with real wet shaving using soap/cream, a brush, and everything else, is a big part of the hobby.

honestly, I don't think I have the courage to test a DE against goo. I complain about good, but thin cutting creamy soaps enough ... I just can't go there.

feather vs goo? no way I'd even risk this baby face

I just used Barbasol pacific rush canned foam and after shave lotion on Wednesday for an excellent shave with a Gillette sensor. Great inexpensive but enjoyable shave. Good OP!

+1 Billion!

The biggest eye-opener for me regarding face prep was washing my face first (before lathering) with a good pre-shave soap. This cleans all the dirt and grim (making the blade work better and easier) and strips the beard hairs of protective sebum oil (allowing water to soften the hairs much much easier). YMMW of course, just my 2c!

Definitely agree with the OP... I've actually used the Barbasol Pacific Rush cream the last couple days, and it wasn't bad at all. Doesn't provide as much hydration as I'd like, but it's perfectly usable. If you want something to use when you're in a hurry, I would go with the Barbasol, which I think is a step up from, say, the Fusion or Edge gels (and even those would still be alright with good prep, technique, etc.).

Isn't there also a video on the internet of a guy shaving with a peanut butter lather:lol:

Yes, with good technique and prep you can get away with using odd lather, but it doesn't make the lather good. I do appreciate the OP, nice to know what can get the job done if need be. Though, since SWMBO started ordering her own soap about a year or more ago, we haven't had can of goo in the house - so I can't see myself ever willingly using it again.

I also did use a can when being on a 3 week trip. Looking in my stash I found a little (traveling?) can and with a together with a cartridge (2 blade Gilette model) that did the trick. Not the best shave, but certainly not bad. And saved a little bit of space in our travelling bags too. As you said, technique does matter too. And thanks to B&B it has changed for the better.
Now being back home I use a regular brush and my EJ89L again. And my H&R soap. Still keeping that can somewhere for a next trip...:)

I've been trying to find a can of the Barbasol for sensitive skin (has lanolin in it) for times when I need to shave but I don't have the 20-30 minutes to whip out the Cella or the RR...but I can't find it locally anywhere.
And I don't want it badly enough to pay like $5 shipping for the damn thing, either.

For several weeks I used Barbasol mixed with water to hydrate it and layered over a king of shaves clone gel. This concoction gave a passable shave but it got to be just too much trouble. A quickly lathering soap like Tabac or Arko is less trouble.

There are some canned goo's that are definitely workable. Barbasol I remember always being good but I haven't used it in years. I tried some Aveeno with my DE a while back when I found an old can in the bathroom cabinet and it gave a very nice shave. Gillette's Fusion Proglide... lots of cushion no glide, bad shave.

I'm not putting up my brush and soap for canned goo unless I have no other choice.

Can't get Barbasol around here. Nivea Extreme Moisturising Gel is ok. I find that one or two shaves is fine with gel, but after that, even though I don't have any irritation, my face isn't in quite as good shape as with brush and soap or cream. Decent for travel

I find that canned goo (ie Barbasol) is superior to many of the low end creams in terms of lubricity, however, you do lose the advantages of the lather process (assuming you face lather). Essentially, using canned goo is the same as bowl lathering low end product
