USS Midway

Today, I had the privilege of touring the carrier USS Midway in San Diego with my son and brother. There was a few barber shops on the ship that I wanted to post pics of, but I also wanted to say this. If you are ever in San Diego you need to take advantage of this. The ship and volunteers are just rich in history. The whole thing is a site to behold and the available activities are amazing. Now for some pics...

Cool, we almost went there a few years ago, decided to stay in the LA area. Went and saw Queen Mary instead. Spent alot of time at the beach due to having the kids with us.

Very cool! Never been on a carrier, but I've been on the battleship Massachusetts, Queen Mary and a number of submarines.

I'm glad to see she's still serving a good purpose. I've been aboard her when she was still on the active rolls when she was still homeported in Japan and deployed with her on other ships as escorts.
A fine ship with a fine history.
Glad she's not just another man made reef somewhere in a nondescript watery grave.

That photo doesn't do her justice. I saw her sailing out of port a few years back when I was down in San Diego for a conference. She is one massive carrier and absolutely dwarfs the Midway.

Wow. I was in the Midway Marine Detachment for two years when her home port was Yokosuka. Lots of memories. Nice to see the old girl looking so good.

They really did a good job on this. The ship is clean and tidy. There are plenty of neat activities and you are able to tour a large amount of the ship. The walls also have plenty of photos and anecdotes from people who served on the ship as well as higher level officers.

I just live up the street a little bit (El Cortez building). I need to make it down the block one of these days.

We were in San Diego a week ago and also visited the Midway. I saw some of the bathroom's, but they were all sealed off with a plexiglass. I never saw this babershop. Very neat. Did you visit the brigg?

I got some great pics on the ship. Below are some taken with my phone (not as good as my camera).

I had a phone conversation with some of the organizers a year or so ago--they were planning to expand their rehab into new spaces. I'm hoping that the Marine quarters will be redone by the time I get out to San Diego the next time.

There is quite a bit of work being done to open the ship up more while we where there. The Marine Orderlies' (assigned to the Admiral??) barracks were available to view as were some helicopters and briefing rooms. Please correct me if I got the Orderlies comment wrong.

We did have orderlies for the Captain and the embarked Admiral. They were a combination driver/bodyguard and a pipeline for information and top-shelf chow from the Admiral to us. They lived with everybody else--so maybe the Marine spaces are open now. As I recall, there were a couple of different spaces that belonged to the Marines. The CO of the detachment and First Sergeant/clerks had an office off the mess deck. Then, a deck below that, there was a larger space. That included the guard office, the armory, an open classroom/rec space, a smaller space that we used as a gym for a while, two barracks spaces and an office for the Gunny and the XO. Up off the hangar deck, we also had a big storeroom that we later put a free weight room into.

Can't say I have, but with a name that cool, it has to be worth visiting! :w00t:

But Oklahoma?

Yeah, seriously. Apparently, sometime after WWII, they moved the sub by flooding a passage of some sort until it arrived in the middle of Oklahoma where they set up a memorial. Cool, just for that.
