What's new

used my new stuff for the first time - wow

hi all,

im a newbie, posted on weds a picture of a load of stuff i had bought and used it today for the first time. did have a shave last week with an old brush and a cheap plastic wilkinson sword DE but count this as my first 'proper' de shave.

what can i say - loved it!

preshave routine was, hot shower, proraso sensitive pre shave cream, then face lather with ej pure badger bush and truefitt and hill sample of 1805 shaving cream. then shaved with my ej 89l with and astra blade. felt great - not baby's bum smooth but a good shave for my fisrt attempt. did two passes - with the grain and across.

after shave routine was alum bloc, follwoed by cold water rinse then t&h 1805 aftershave balm - sample again.

had one or two little nick on my neck, nothing major. for my first time with 'proper' kit im very pleased.

I'm sure you'll love that EJ DE89L as much as I love mine. It is a great razor and looks beautiful to boot.

I think shooting for a "darn fine shave" the first week or so is key. After a couple of DFS experiences I tried for the BBS that first week--lots of irritation.

Last week after about a month of shaving I tried the three pass BBS run and had no irritation whatsoever. I was glad I'd gone back to the 2-pass DFS for a few weeks to hone my technique.

good luck!

Something to note to is depending on your skin type BBS may be too much for your face. For some reason when I try and go ATG on my neck it revolts something fierce. Either way, best of luck to you and welcome to a great wet shaving journey! Any thoughts on what your next acquisition will be? :-D

i dont know if you saw my post the other day, so far ive got a truefitt and hill sample pack of balms and creams, bluebeards revenge soap, a ej badger brush, ej 89 razor, tobs lavendar cream, some t&h lavendar cream on the way as i was sent tobs lavendar by mistake, and they said to keep it, astra blades, 7 oclock blades and feather blades, and have bought a 1912 gillette razor and a souplex razor on ebay to clean up! oh and some proraso pre shave cream!

got enough to keep me going for a while, but really like the smell of the t&h 1805 balm so mnight get some more of that, or a gillette bostonian or aristocrat! dont want to get too much more cream or soap at the minute till i get used to using one.

It is always so nice to hear of successful initial attempts. Wish my first forays were that good. Many happy shaves to you, sir!:001_smile:001_smile

You have some top notch shaving supplies to start with. Be patient and the shaves will continue to improve as you refine your technique. For me, even more important was the pleasure I got from taking a few extra minutes to pamper myself every morning, enjoying something that for years had been a monotonous chore.

....enjoying something that for years had been a monotonous chore.

Since beginning this hobby, that is the reason I am glad I did it!! As soon as I hear the alarm and start moving to the shower I am thinking about my morning shave. It makes it easier to get out of bed, and shaving is no longer another thing that has to be done before I get out of the house.:001_smile

I'm glad to see your foray into wet shaving was so great. It really is a fantastic time to relax and reflect on the day ahead. Plus, getting a really good shave always feels like a small accomplishment.

Good work! That T&H 1805 is still one of my top 2 cents after having tried dozens of products and it works great to boot. You have good intuition starting there :thumbup1:
