What's new

Used a Slant for the 1st time.

Well I finally got of my backside and used my Slant this week for the first time. Shaved WED, THUR, and FRI using a Wikinson Sword blade.

The good news is the results were near BBS shaves with two pass WTG shaves. The bad news is I got a few nicks and weepers and my face feels a little raw.

My technique was the same as in slow with no pressure. I'm just wondering if my face is not made for Slants as in I have sensitive skin or I need to use a sharper blade like a Feathers.

By the way, does anyone have just a few Feathers I could try?

Thanks

David

I am quite new, but got brave and went with the slant. I had no issues or weepers with an IP Red. My techniques was the same as any other DE razor. Great shave! I only shave every other day as I work at home - haven't driven it daily.

I have the same problem with Wilkinsons in my slant. You should try a Derby or Personna first. I wouldn't recomment a Feather as first blade in the slant.

The blade makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE. My experience is that the slant requires a SHARP blade and a correct angle, mostly the sharp blade. The ONLY time I use a feather is in my slant (S). An IP works ok as well but not like the feather. Tried 2 other blades at first and my face, (around the corners of my mouth) suffered for days.

PM me your info any I'd be happy to send you a couple of feathers, I think you'll be surprised! Just remember NO PRESSURE:thumbup::laugh:

I agree with the use of a Feather with the slant. I like Feathers for all my razors but I could use other blades if I wanted to. With my slant I don't even try anything else.

Face prep is crucial. Leave your lather on for at least 2 minutes. Take short choppy strokes and keep the slant as parallel to your face as possible.

Irridum supers are sharp, smooth and forgiving. They work very well in a slant.

Being closer I would send you some feathers but I see that you might get some...

With time, you will get great shaves with the Slant, it's a very good piece!

First of all Thank You for the Feathers offer. I'll PM my address soon.

I was a little disappointed with my Slant shave as it was uncomfortable and I had weepers/nicks. Plus shaving under my nose was challenging.

Still I don't want to give up just yet. I believe my technique was good as in WTG, slow and no pressure. I think you may be right with your statement, "The blade makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

The Wilkinsons do a good job with my Gillette Techs and Super-speeds. Also they work well with my Merkur HD and 1904. As for the Slant, it looks like a sharper blade is needed.

I look forward to getting the blades and once again Thank You for the offer.

Thank you however I wish you would disregard the geography.:a36:

I'm still a "kid at heart" and it would be fun to get a post from the distant land of Australia.

Thanks

There in my mailbox, hope they work. Hey, I'm gonna give you two other tips that work for me, choke up on the razor, tried a 39c tonite (the longer handled slant referred to as the sledgehammer) and it was ok, but I think I like my 37g better. anyway choke up a little and take a longer stroke with no pressure. Don't want to start an arguement with anyone but it works for me,

Just my 2 cents.

All right, let's make a deal, if nobody can set you up with a pack of Feathers by Monday, let me know and I will ship you some, how's that?

Good advice given out a long time ago by someone on this forum was:

Align the blade carefully
Use a steep angle (handle further away fro your face) compared to a Gillette
No pressure
Make sure you have plenty of lather
Concentrate

A sharp blade is also essential with any DE.

Ted,

Got the blades today.

Thanks.

I'm using BIC disposables for now till my face recovers.

Later this week I'll give the feathers a try with the Slant.

I will keep in mind your suggestions on technique etc.

Thanks again.

Got the blades today (Monday) from tlanning.

Thanks for the offer.

By the way, is it possible you could ship me a Tasmanian Devil?

I think my cat would like a roommate.

I suspect my problem may be my shaving angle.

Let you know in the near future how it turns out.

The best I can do is a possum... But, I don't think you want one of those...

It's always nice to see another convert to the more Slant-ed world. And a fellow New Englander to boot. Enjoy the Slant. It just requires a bit more attention to technique but once you are dialed in, you will wonder why you waited so long to get one.

Well thanks for the nice words but I'm not sure that I'm a Slant convert
quite yet.

Will I become a Slant convert or just use it in my rotation only time will tell.

By the way, do you use Feathers blade only and if so were do you get yours?

Thanks

Well it is time to report back on the Slant.

The last three days I used the Slant with a Feather blade.

The Results:

On the Plus side, got a BBS shave with two pass shave of WTG and XTG.
I shaved at 0630 AM and now 12 hours later I just starting to feel my 5 o'clock shadow. This gets me thinking about night shaving again. The Feather blade does make a noticeable difference as in no pull or drag.

On the Negative side, I still got a few weepers but Alum Block put a stop to them. The shave was apprehensive as in shaving under my nose and below my chin. No mater what angle I used I felt and did draw blood. And once again regardless of prep and technique my face felt "raw" after my shave.

Conclusion, the Slant with a Feather blade gave me a BBS shave with only two passes. However it is not for me. And the reason is my skin is very sensitive. In fact I cannot shave more than a two-pass shave with any razor without my face feeling "raw". That includes BIC Disposable, Super-speed or Tech.

Looks like it will not be in my rotation, however I do see a possible place for the Slant as a shaver for two-day old or more beards. Yet I'm asking myself wouldn't my HD Open Comb be a better tool? Still I have to admit the Slant is one of the best looking razors in my DE harem.

Once again Thanks tlanning for the blades and your helpful suggestions.
