Upside down base plates?

So I've seen it more than once on the eBay: vintage razor pics assembled and seem to have the curve of the baseplate facing upward. It looks as if the head is assembled with the baseplate upside down. Why is this?

Are there vintage models that look like this? I can't imagine it supports the blade properly.
Is there some weird cult of upside down base plate shavers? Is there a valid reason? Technique?

or is it just some people lack the knowledge to assemble a three piece razor?

Maddening.

When I got my first DE several years ago, a Merkur 23C, the first time I tried to put a blade in it, I had the base plate upside down. After looking at it for a moment, I realized that there was then no gap between the baseplate and the edge of the blade. Then I flipped the baseplate...huge difference! It's not surprising to me that people who've never used one, don't know how it's supposed to go together.
