+1 we are hear to help

Did you stretch your skin enough? And don't use lots of pressure let the blade do all the work. Just small strokes at a time.

It wasnt like I gave myself a glasgow smile but I think I will be investing in one of the nick solutions

sounds like a fair set up to me. I like to keep my face moist with water while i prep my tools, and gather everything, and build lather, sometimes this requires i splash hot water on my face 2 or 3 times. look for a styptic pen at walmart or walgreens that will stop the bleeding from nicks and weepers.

If you have not read the shave wiki hear on badger and blade, I would.
It has helped me quite a bit.
got to get the angel of the blade right all that.
first time you do anything you tend to make allot of mistakes.

Don't feel bad first time i shaved with a double edged razor I had cuts, nicks, blood dripping in the sink and razor burn that turned my face red.

I didn't had any nick or cut when I performed my first DE shave, maybe because I have used a Derby blade, I had some nicks when I used a feather for my first time. It's a part of the process. Maybe you need to watch some tutorials on youtube. Geofatboy has a lot of videos on his channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/geofatboy

I am sorry to hear this. I also didn't have a single nick or cut for my first 3 DE shaves (4th shave was the eye opener for me). I think the main ingredients that lead to a poor DE experience is:

-Putting too much pressure on the razor.
-Blade Angle.
-Doing long strokes instead of short.

The most important one out of these is the pressure. If you don't put any pressure on the razor and have the wrong angle it won't tear your skin up to much, but if you are pushing with the wrong angle it can get ugly.

Of course there are other factors like quality of lather etc... but as long as you keep the lather wet and slick it should give you a decent shave. If the lather is thin or drying out it can cause problems.

Get your self a Styptic pencil. This will stop any bleeding from nicks and cuts almost instantly. If you can't find one (they are at most pharmacies) you can get a small spice jar of Alum which will do the same thing along with helping your dill pickles stay crisp :001_smile

Mistake I make that results in cuts and razor burn is not relathering between passes. If you have no lather. Don't shave there.

Also, don't press. Just let the razor work. If you press you will cut yourself and look at the way your beard grows (it may be you're going against the grain and not realizing). Avoid going against the grain.

Sincerest apologies BJ, poor lather as you described will certainly lead to a rougher shave.; your kit looks fine so let's just work on technique. How long did you load the brush for? Bowl or face lather?

Why not do a test lather and put some pics up so the guys here can really diagnose? Here to help out.

Upside is that it can only get better...

Sorry to jump in on this thread Bjkearns & One cut.
But I think this is a candidate for CUSTOM TITLE.
If you don't want it I'm sure Angel of the blade will go to someone worthy sooner or later.
Ah just thought---, has someone already got it.:001_unsur

Hope all your next shaves are close ones Bjkearns.

P.S. Try Arko,
I had trouble with lathering till I tried it (or the palmolive sticks)

Everyone's first shave with a de razor is a bloodletting. All your shaves from this point will get progressively better - just relax, and enjoy the ride. Do your research on this site (lots of awesome posts with helpful advice because we have all been there), watch you tube shaving videos, and practice. And there is nothing wrong with a Definitely Fine Shave.

Cheers

Sorry you had a bad shave. All of your gear is of good quality, I like my superspeeds, I get along well with Lord blades, and Proraso is a fine cream.

Keep at it my friend! It only gets better from here!

1. Practice with the razor on your face without a blade to get used to the proper angle. What you should be feeling with a Superspeed is mostly doors and partly safety bar.
2. Get a thick, dense lather.
3. Go slowly at first. Do not rush. Learn your face again.
4. Go straight down on the neck for now. It's not as simple as your cheeks but you'll learn it too, in time.

You should be fine. :)

If I am awarded the title I have to take it.

If the shoe fits.
