Uber Lather

WOW! So if you guys want to make some uber lather I got a great suggestion for you guys to try it out. I use three in rotation TOBS Avocado, AOS Lavender and Poraso as my shaving creams.

When I was watching videos on youtube by Mantic or any other user, there were videos about making super/uber lather. Ingredients are any shave cream, glycerin (if you have it) and a shave soap. Usually the soaps were of Williams Mug soap or the VDH.

1. swirl your shave brush in the soap
2. In a bowl add a almond sized or teaspoon amt of any shave cream.
3. Add any glycerin if you wanted too.

After everything is added, mix everything in the bowl until you get a crazy amount of a whipped cream consistency lather.

One day I tried it out and instead of using VDH or WMS, I used my mama's bear shaving soap and paired with any of the three SC listed above and got amazing amounts of lather. My favorite pair is with TOBS Avocado and I have the MB's 100% Natural Cocoa Shaving soap. Let me tell you I actually had one of the closest shaves i've ever had since I tried it.

I think you guys should give it try at least once. What do you guys think? Let me know how it went!

I've used an unbranded soap with Men-u shave cream. I tend to add shave oil if i'm mug lathering or do a shave oil coat underneath the soap and cream if face lathering. Epicly soft results, close shave. Bit of a mix of smells though. I liked it, at least.

Here's a thought--Use double cream or double soap.

I feel like the only reason the lather is so "ubery" is because there's ultimately more product. I can whip up a mean lather with either/or alone. I've never found uberlather to give me better results, either.

And when you uber lather, most fellas will do it in a mug or bowl because it's easier to use the cream, but i'm a face latherer and if I build the lather on my face, my face has a certain different slickness and moisturization that bowl lather cannot parallel and thus my shaves will become better in the end using one product exclusively and face lathering.

Of course with the way I lather creams on my face I guess this can be done, but the efficacy of one product is the reason I choose it.. when you mix two you lose the excitement of switching to single products and your choices for difference reduce.

If you're a face latherer like me, on a side note, you can easily uber lather by loading your brush and setting it down then take the cream in your hands and rub it in to your beard and start lathering, and I guess it's not that much work considering you're just swirling around the brush in the tub of soap that you normally wouldn't be doing but for reasons mentioned previously, i'll skip.

Seems more a novelty than anything else, honestly. Just my perspective and 2 cents, though. Hope that helps.

so what's your opinion on the addition of glycerin when face lathering? do you squirt it with the cream and mix it in your hands? pure glycerin is quite drying because it can suck moisture out but when used with other products it will hold water and oils to your skin.

I agree- It does seem a bit novel. I think it was just the shave oil that helped. It made up for my poor, inexperienced lathering skills, i believe.

I very much enjoy the uberlather.I have found that the added glycerin is not an option,it is a must.
I have tried seveal combinations and some were not good,to say the least. The very best combo for me has been Bigelow and MyTimeBathandBody Menthol soap with about 4 drops of glycerin.
Gives me an incredible shave.

you know it is a novel thing to do. If you really think about it, your using twice as much product than what you usually use. But once in a while to change up a bit, it doesn't hurt to do it. I haven't tried adding glycerin b/c the Mama Bear soap already has it I think. But I think i'll go ahead and try adding it to the Poraso like Easttexasman and see how is opinion works! Thanks.

Ah, one of my favorite topics! :001_smile

I am a big fan of uberlather - a topic that has been discussed before. See http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=156022&highlight=uberlather Since using uberlather I have gotten consistently good shaves. At times I revert back to just using a cream or soap - but the next time I shave I use the uberlather route.

So far I have used MWF, Mama Bears Unscented, the shaveden's sub zero as the soap and I have used Proraso, TOBS almond, Gillette Menthol, Godrej De Luxe, Palmolive, GFTs almond among others, and a host of T&H products. All I can say is that I have yet to find a mixture that does not work.

One of the best things to try is MWF with Proraso plus glycerin. You will be amazed with the results. You can double the Proraso alone but it will not give you the results you get with the combo. Plus, I only put in a pea size amount of any cream to get fantastic results.

Keep in mind you are not using double the product. You don't need to use much soap or cream. As the old Brylcream ad used to say (as those of us who are a bit older will recall) just a dab will do ya.

The procedure I use is as follows. First I soak a brush in a mug filled with hot water. I take the brush out and empty the mug. I put in a pea size amount of cream plus about six to nine drops of glycerin in the mug. I then swirl the brush in the soap just a few times and take the brush to the mug. I whip up the mixture adding water as needed. When it reaches the consistency I like I lather up. It takes very little time to get the mixture you want. In fact, it takes less time, IMO, than face lathering or using soap or cream in a bowl. I usually get the right consistency in less than a minute of whipping the mixture.

You have been using more glycerin that I have,I add about 4 drops.I will try using more and the MWF and Proraso sound pretty good too.

I started using more glycerin after seeing this on the Internet somewhere. It seemed to work even better so I just continued.

I've never really noticed any huge extra advantages to superlather, but I've never really thought about it much either. It does have its uses, though -- if you've got an underperforming soap (e.g., C&M or C&E) and an well-performing unscented cream, you can use the latter to get performance with the scent of the former. I also like spiking my MWF with a scented cream every so often...ending up with a sandalwood-scened MWF lather is great!

The one that has been really working for me is the VDH and Kiss my Face or Poraso. For some reason I can't bring myself to put cream in my MWF. Maybe I have and did not realize it? I dunno. Until somebody buys me another brand of soap besides MWF and VDH I do not see any changes in the near future.

Mixes:
  • Godrej Lime and Tabac (smells best per SWIMO :001_rolle)
  • Proraso and Bigelow and or Godrej Menthol Mist :)thumbup1:menthol nirvana)
  • Cade and Godrej Rich Foam (smell best to me :001_cool:)

All make great uberlathers and occasionally throw some VDH for the soap in the mix. Been doing super and uberlathers since July and Kiss My Face Lime is a great stand in cream if I want to stretch out the Godrejs.

My favorite is Mama Bears 100% Natural Cocoa Shave soap along with TOBS Avocado Shave Cream. Best lather ever and you get enough for more than 4 passes. I get the best shaves with that combo. If any you have Mama Bears Shave soap and TOBS Shave cream, pair the two together and you won't regret it I promise!

Yes, I use Mama Bears Unscented with TOBS almond and it a great combo. As I have said previously, I have yet to find a combo that does not work.

I use Ogallala Bay rum soap and Speick cream! Also I use Saint Charles shave cream and shave soap and it is fabulous. With both I use 5 drops of Glycerin.
